> Take fat-soluble vitamins (D, A, E, K) and omega-3 with a meal that contains fat, take iron in the morning away from tea, coffee and calcium, and take zinc and magnesium with food. Evening magnesium is a preference, not a proven benefit. Consistency matters more than the clock, and some supplements must be separated from medicines by hours.

Key facts:
- Vitamin D, A, E, K and omega-3 are best taken with a meal that contains fat.
- Iron absorption is blocked by the hepcidin peak about 3 to 6 hours after exercise, so take it in the morning or soon after training.
- Keep iron away from tea, coffee, calcium and high-dose zinc, and separate magnesium from tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics.
- Evening magnesium is a preference; it has not been shown to work better than other times.

## When should you take each supplement?

| Supplement | Best timing | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Vitamin D (and A, E, K) | With a meal that contains some fat, daily | Fat-soluble; daily dosing is preferred to large intermittent doses |
| Omega-3 fish oil | With a meal containing fat | Better absorption; fewer fishy burps |
| Multivitamin | With a meal | Reduces nausea and aids absorption of fat-soluble parts |
| Iron | Morning, ideally before training or within about 30 minutes after, with vitamin C | Hepcidin rises about 3 to 6 hours after exercise and blocks absorption |
| Zinc | With food | Limits nausea |
| Magnesium | With food; evening is common | Evening is preference, not proven; limits diarrhoea |
| Vitamin B12 | Any time; weekly high doses suit people who forget daily tablets | Absorption is dose-limited, not time-limited |
| Probiotics | Follow the label, daily for several weeks | Effects are strain-specific; storage matters |

## What should you keep apart?

- **Iron vs tea, coffee, calcium and high-dose zinc.** Keep these a few hours away from your iron tablet, and expect proton-pump inhibitors to lower iron absorption.
- **Iron vs levothyroxine,** and **iron or zinc vs quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics.** Separate by a few hours; ask your pharmacist for the exact gap.
- **Magnesium vs tetracyclines, quinolones and bisphosphonates.** Also keep them a few hours apart.
- **Zinc and iron together.** They compete for absorption, so avoid taking high doses at the same time.

## Is there a perfect time for vitamin D?

No. The key points are daily dosing and a meal with some fat. The supplement does not need to be taken with the sun or at a certain hour. Mind the total dose: the EFSA upper limit is 4 000 IU (100 µg) a day ([how much vitamin D to take](/answers/how-much-vitamin-d-should-i-take-south-africa/)).

## Does timing around training matter?

Mostly for iron. Taking it before training or soon after, in the morning, avoids the post-exercise hepcidin peak. For most other vitamins, timing around exercise does not change results. Creatine, caffeine and protein have their own timing rules, which are covered in separate answers.

## What if you take several supplements?

A simple routine for many South Africans:

- **Breakfast:** multivitamin, vitamin D3 and omega-3 (all with food).
- **Mid-morning or before training:** iron, only if prescribed or tested for, with vitamin C and away from coffee.
- **Dinner or bedtime:** magnesium with a small snack, if you use it.

Do not take everything at once to save time; do add up the labels so you do not exceed upper limits ([can you take too many vitamins?](/answers/can-you-take-too-many-vitamins/)).

## What about heat?

Store tablets and softgels in a cool, dry cupboard, not a car or gym bag in a South African summer. Heat and humidity degrade probiotics and oxidise fish oil ([storing supplements in South African heat](/answers/how-to-store-supplements-in-south-african-heat/)).

If you take prescription medicines, ask your pharmacist whether your timing is safe. Read also [iron supplements for runners](/answers/iron-supplements-for-runners-south-africa/).
