> Only modestly. Most fat burners are stimulant blends whose effect comes mainly from caffeine and green tea catechins, which slightly raise energy expenditure; real fat loss from them is small compared with diet, protein and resistance training. Risks include racing heart, insomnia, liver injury and undeclared banned drugs. As of October 2026, South African fat burners cost about R5 to R25 per serving.

Key facts:
- Caffeine and green tea catechins modestly increase energy expenditure, but fat burners do not replace an energy deficit (evidence weak).
- EFSA 2018 linked 800 mg or more of EGCG a day from supplements to raised liver enzymes.
- Duiven 2021: 38% of 66 Dutch web-shop fat-loss, muscle and energy supplements contained undeclared doping substances.
- As of October 2026, South African fat burners cost R5.00 (USN PhedraCut XT One-A-Day) to R25.50 (Biogen Rage Thermo Extreme) per serving.

## What is in a fat burner and what does it do?

Typical ingredients are caffeine, green tea extract (EGCG), synephrine (bitter orange), yohimbine, capsaicin and L-carnitine. Caffeine and green tea catechins modestly increase energy expenditure. In real-world use this translates into small additional fat loss at best, and nothing replaces an energy deficit. Evidence level: weak. The ISSN caffeine position stand supports 3 to 6 mg per kg body mass for performance, which for a 70 kg person is 210 to 420 mg.

| Ingredient | Effect on fat loss | Main concern |
|---|---|---|
| Caffeine | Small rise in energy expenditure, tolerance develops | Jitters, palpitations, sleep loss, high blood pressure |
| Green tea extract (EGCG) | Small | Liver injury at high doses; EFSA links 800 mg a day or more to raised liver enzymes |
| Synephrine, DMAA, DMBA | Unproven | AIS Group D (banned or high contamination risk) |
| Yohimbine, capsaicin, L-carnitine | Little to none in healthy people | Heart rate, blood pressure, stomach upset |

## What does the South African shelf look like?

All the fat burners we found are sold as Category D complementary medicines, and the Dis-Chem Living Fit pages say they are not evaluated by SAHPRA. Per serving, October 2026:

| Product | Price | Per serving | Label notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| USN PhedraCut XT Burn One-A-Day | R239 to R300 for 60 | R5.00 | caffeine amount not captured; other actives not quantified on the retailer page |
| Slimz Slimmer One-A-Day | R235 for 30 | R7.83 | 90 mg caffeine per capsule |
| NPL Thermo Cuts Black | R580 to R600 for 80 | R15.00 | caffeine amount not captured; other actives not quantified |
| Biogen Rage Thermo Extreme | R510 for 80 | R25.50 | 150 mg caffeine per capsule; the dose of 2 capsules twice daily gives 600 mg a day by our calculation |

Those prices buy a stimulant, not a guaranteed result. The Biogen label totals 600 mg of caffeine a day, which is about 8.6 mg per kg for a 70 kg person, above the 3 to 6 mg per kg range linked to benefit. Several pages also warn that more than 200 mg of caffeine a day is not recommended in pregnancy.

## Do they beat the basics?

No. What reliably drives fat loss is a modest calorie deficit, about 1.6 g or more of protein per kg of body weight, resistance training and sleep. See [how much protein to lose fat](/answers/how-much-protein-to-lose-fat/) and [the best protein powder for weight loss](/answers/best-protein-powder-for-weight-loss-south-africa/). If you want caffeine's small boost, a coffee is cheaper and easier to dose than a multi-ingredient product ([caffeine and fat loss](/answers/caffeine-and-fat-loss-thermogenics/)).

## What are the risks?

- **Stimulant overload:** palpitations, high blood pressure, anxiety, insomnia and gut upset.
- **Liver injury:** from high-dose green tea extract.
- **Contamination:** Duiven and colleagues (2021) found that 38% of 66 Dutch web-shop products marketed for fat loss, muscle, energy or hormones contained undeclared doping substances, including DMAA, oxilofrine and BMPEA. This is a Dutch sample, not a South African measurement.

Anyone with heart disease, high blood pressure, anxiety, thyroid problems, pregnancy, or taking antidepressants or stimulants should avoid them, as should under-18s. Read [are fat burners safe and legal in South Africa?](/answers/are-fat-burners-safe-south-africa/), and ask about green tea extract before buying any blend.

The prices above are for context only and are not a recommendation. If you do not want to rely on supplements, the basics above are where to start.
