> Creatine can cause a 1-2 kg rise in body weight in the first weeks, but this is extra water stored inside muscle cells, not the puffy bloating of fluid under the skin. Stomach bloating and loose stools mainly follow large loading doses or poorly dissolved powder. Skipping the loading phase, taking 3-5 g with food, and using a fine micronised powder usually prevents it.

Key facts:
- Creatine typically adds 1-2 kg of body weight in the first weeks, as water stored inside muscle cells.
- Stomach bloating is linked to large loading doses (around 20 g a day), undissolved powder or sweetened mixes.
- Without loading, 3-5 g a day reaches full saturation in about 3-4 weeks with fewer stomach effects.
- Studies of athletes training in the heat do not show creatine causes dehydration or cramping.

## Does creatine make you retain water?

Yes, in a specific way. Creatine draws water into muscle cells (intracellular water), which accounts for the 1-2 kg weight gain many people see in the first weeks, especially after a loading phase. This water sits inside the muscle, which is part of why the muscle looks fuller and can perform better. It is not the same as water retention under the skin, and it is not fat. Evidence level: **strong**.

## Why do some people feel bloated?

Stomach bloating, gas or loose stools are a separate issue and have different causes:

- **Large single doses.** Loading regimens of around 20 g a day can upset the gut, especially if taken in one or two big portions.
- **Undissolved powder.** Grit sitting in the stomach can draw water into the intestine. Finer micronised powders dissolve more easily; see [micronised vs regular creatine](/answers/micronised-vs-regular-creatine-south-africa/).
- **Taking it on an empty stomach** with too little fluid.
- **Mixes with sugars, sugar alcohols or sweeteners,** which can cause bloating on their own. Plain, single-ingredient creatine avoids this.

## How do you prevent bloating?

1. **Skip loading.** Take 3-5 g a day; saturation takes 3-4 weeks instead of one. See [do you need to load creatine](/answers/do-you-need-to-load-creatine/).
2. **If you load,** split the dose into four portions of 5-6 g, taken with meals.
3. **Dissolve it fully** in 200-300 ml of water or a shake, and stir until clear.
4. **Take it with food,** such as a post-training shake with protein and carbohydrate.
5. **Start at 3 g** if you are sensitive and build to 5 g.
6. **Drink normally.** Creatine does not cause dehydration or cramping in studies of athletes training in the heat.

## How long does the water weight last?

It stays as long as you take creatine, because muscle stores stay full. If you stop, stores gradually fall over a few weeks and the water goes with them. For a weight-class sport (boxing, judo, rowing), plan around this and trial creatine well before a weigh-in.

## How much does a clean creatine cost?

As of October 2026, plain creatine monohydrate costs R2.22 to R6.25 per 5 g in South Africa. ATP Fitness Micronised 600 g (R500) is R4.17 per 5 g, with the trade-offs that it is unflavoured and from a young brand with no published third-party certification; Biogen 500 g (R444.99, R4.45) and Nutritech 500 g (R2.50 to R3.99) are alternatives. See the [best creatine in South Africa](/best/best-creatine-south-africa/).

## When should you see a doctor?

If bloating comes with significant pain, persistent diarrhoea, swelling in your face or legs, or much less urine than usual, stop creatine and see a doctor. Anyone with kidney disease should only use creatine under medical supervision. Read more in [creatine side effects](/answers/creatine-side-effects-south-africa/).
