> No. In October 2026 imported whey on South African shelves costs roughly 1.7 to 3.6 times a local tub per kilogram: Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 900 g is R1 150 and Myprotein Impact Whey 1 kg is R1 300 at Dis-Chem, against R329–R700 for local 908 g blends. Impact Whey works out near R51 per 30 g of protein, versus R23–R33 for mainstream local blends.

Key facts:
- Imported whey on Dis-Chem's shelves cost about 1.7–3.6 times a local tub per kilogram in October 2026: Myprotein Impact Whey 1 kg R1 300, Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 900 g R1 150.
- Myprotein Impact Whey works out at about R51 per 30 g protein, against about R23.50–R33 for NPL and USN local blends.
- To match USN BlueLab per 30 g protein, a 1 kg Impact Whey would have to land at about R716 all-in (our calculation).
- Sports supplements carry 15% VAT in South Africa, which still applies to personal imports.

## Is imported whey cheaper than local whey in South Africa?

Not on the shelf. The imported tubs we priced at Dis-Chem in October 2026 cost between about 1.7 and 3.6 times the local 908 g to 1 kg tubs per kilogram, and the gap widens once you count protein rather than powder.

| Product | Origin | Price (October 2026) | Per 30 g protein |
|---|---|---|---|
| NPL Platinum Whey Plus 1 kg | South Africa | R490 | about R23.50 |
| USN BlueLab 100% Whey 1 kg | South Africa | R689 | about R28 |
| Evox Whey Advanced 908 g | South Africa | R670 | not calculable: scoop weight is not on the listing |
| NPL Platinum Whey 908 g | South Africa | R700 | about R33 |
| Myprotein Impact Whey 1 kg | United Kingdom | R1 300 | about R51 |
| Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 900 g | United States | R1 150 | about R47 (using the 29.4 g scoop on ON's UK site) |

Rand per 30 g protein is price divided by total grams of protein in the tub, multiplied by 30, using the serving data on each listing.

## Why do imports cost more?

Freight, 15% VAT, customs and Port Health clearance, importer and retailer margins, and brand positioning all sit in the shelf price. A higher price does not mean better accuracy: University of Pretoria testing of 70 South African-sold protein products found label shortfalls across the market without naming brands, so check [how label accuracy is tested](/answers/what-is-amino-spiking-whey-south-africa/) rather than assuming imports are safer. Myprotein's Dis-Chem page states Informed Choice certification; we did not check the certifier's register.

## What would importing it yourself cost?

Add international shipping, 15% VAT and customs duty. We could not verify a duty rate for whey because it depends on tariff classification, so ask your courier for the tariff treatment before ordering. Two 2026 rule points from Evetech's summary: VAT was added to the former sub-R500 parcel concession from September 2024, and private imports are capped at R150 000 a year. Dairy products can also need veterinary permits and Port Health inspection when imported commercially (see [can you import supplements into South Africa](/answers/can-i-import-supplements-into-south-africa/)). Marketplace sites such as Desertcart say their prices include shipping, duties and clearance, with 3–9 business days delivery, but we found no verified Rand price for a comparable whey.

Here is a break-even instead. For Myprotein Impact Whey 1 kg to match USN BlueLab's R28 per 30 g protein, the tub would have to land in South Africa for about R716 including shipping, VAT and duty. That is roughly 45% below the Dis-Chem price, which is unlikely for a 1 kg parcel.

## When does importing make sense?

Rarely for whey. It can make sense for a specific product not sold locally. Weigh summer heat in transit, the best-before date and whether the label meets South African rules (see [local vs imported supplements](/answers/local-vs-imported-supplements-south-africa/)). For most buyers, a local tub from the [best whey protein in South Africa](/best/best-whey-protein-south-africa/) list is cheaper per gram of protein.
