> Most people in South Africa do not need glutamine: a 2019 meta-analysis found no meaningful effect on performance, body composition or immune function in athletes. If you still want it, buy on price, because a 5 g dose of plain L-glutamine is the same molecule in every tub. Nutritech L-Glutamine 300 g is the cheapest at R2.68 per 5 g (R160.95, Wellness Warehouse, October 2026), followed by The Harvest Table 450 g at R3.32. Single-ingredient tubs from Biogen, Myprotein and ATP Fitness cost R4.53–R7.50 per 5 g.

## 2026 at a glance: ranked on cost per 5 g of plain L-glutamine

1. **Nutritech L-Glutamine 300 g** (Cheapest per 5 g): R160.95 at Wellness Warehouse (R168 at Clicks) for 300 g is R2.68–R2.80 per 5 g, about R80 a month.
2. **The Harvest Table L-Glutamine 450 g pouch** (Best large pouch): R299 for 450 g at Faithful to Nature is R3.32 per 5 g, with 90 doses per pouch.
3. **USN Pure Glutamine 300 g** (Easiest to find): R259 for 300 g on USN's shop is R4.32 per 5 g; tagged Halaal and vegan.
4. **Biogen L-Glutamine 500 g** (Best pharmacy big tub): R452.99 for 500 g at Dis-Chem is R4.53 per 5 g, 100 doses.
5. **Clicks (house brand) Clicks L-Glutamine Muscle Volume Revitaliser 125 g** (Small trial tub): Clicks house brand at R130 for 125 g is R5.20 per 5 g, 25 doses.
6. **Myprotein L-Glutamine Powder Unflavoured 500 g** (Clearest label): Unflavoured with a stated 5 g serving; R549.99 for 500 g at Dis-Chem Living Fit is R5.50 per 5 g.
7. **Biogen L-Glutamine 200 g** (Poor-value size): R254.99 for 200 g is R6.37 per 5 g, 41% more per dose than Biogen's 500 g.
8. **ATP Fitness L-Glutamine** (Clean label, highest price): Single ingredient with no sweeteners, but R300 for 200 g is R7.50 per 5 g, the dearest here.

## Does glutamine do anything for athletes?

Glutamine is the most abundant free amino acid in the body and fuels immune and gut-lining cells. That makes it sound useful, but the research in healthy, well-fed athletes is disappointing. A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis in *Clinical Nutrition* (Ramezani Ahmadi et al., 47 studies reviewed, 25 pooled) found **no significant effect on immune function, aerobic performance or body composition**. Our evidence rating is Weak.

There are two niches worth knowing about. Researchers are studying glutamine for gut-barrier support during exercise in the heat, using doses scaled to body mass that are far larger than a 5 g scoop; this is experimental. And glutamine is used clinically under medical supervision. Neither is a reason for a gym-goer to buy it. If you eat enough protein, you already get several grams a day: whey protein is naturally rich in glutamine and glutamate.

## What is a fair price for glutamine in South Africa?

Typical retail servings are 5 g. Cost per 5 g = price ÷ tub grams × 5.

| Product | Price (Oct 2026) | R per 5 g | R per month (30 x 5 g) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nutritech 300 g | R160.95 | R2.68 | R80 |
| The Harvest Table 450 g | R299 | R3.32 | R100 |
| USN Pure Glutamine 300 g | R259 | R4.32 | R130 |
| Biogen 500 g | R452.99 | R4.53 | R136 |
| Clicks 125 g | R130 | R5.20 | R156 |
| Myprotein 500 g | R549.99 | R5.50 | R165 |
| Biogen 200 g | R254.99 | R6.37 | R191 |
| ATP Fitness 200 g | R300 | R7.50 | R225 |

The spread is nearly three-fold for the same amino acid. Because the evidence for benefit is weak, there is no case for paying for a premium tub; buy the cheapest pure L-glutamine you trust.

## Brand by brand

### 1. Nutritech L-Glutamine 300 g (Cheapest)

Nutritech's 300 g L-glutamine is the cheapest we found: R160.95 at Wellness Warehouse and R168 at Clicks (both via PriceCheck), so **R2.68–R2.80 per 5 g** and about R80 a month. Nutritech is a long-running budget brand that is easy to find in Clicks stores. The listings we read did not publish a serving size, flavouring or testing information, so check the tub label for the ingredient list. If you have decided to take glutamine despite the weak evidence, this is the sensible buy.

Strengths: R2.68 per 5 g, the lowest price we found; Sold at Clicks and Wellness Warehouse; 300 g lasts 60 days at 5 g

Trade-offs: Serving size and full ingredient list not published on the listings we read; No third-party sport testing listed

### 2. The Harvest Table L-Glutamine 450 g pouch (Large pouch)

The Harvest Table sells L-glutamine in a 450 g pouch for R299 at Faithful to Nature, which is **R3.32 per 5 g** and 90 doses. It is the cheapest per dose among the larger packs and suits health-store shoppers who already buy through Faithful to Nature. A pouch is less convenient than a tub in a humid bathroom or gym bag, so tip it into an airtight container. Testing and serving details were not on the listing, so use 5 g as your working dose.

Strengths: R3.32 per 5 g; 90 doses per pouch; Available through Faithful to Nature

Trade-offs: Pouch is harder to keep dry; No testing or serving information on the listing

### 3. USN Pure Glutamine 300 g (Most available)

USN Pure Glutamine 300 g costs R259 on USN's shop, which is **R4.32 per 5 g**. USN's 150 g Glutamine 9000 is R129 (R4.30 per 5 g). The shop tags it Halaal, vegan and vegetarian. You pay about 60% more per dose than Nutritech for USN's availability across Dis-Chem, Clicks and Takealot, which matters if you want to pick up a tub on the way to the gym rather than order online. The shop page does not publish a serving size, so use 5 g (about a level teaspoon) as the working dose.

Strengths: Stocked by most supplement retailers; Tagged Halaal and vegan on USN's shop; R4.32 per 5 g

Trade-offs: About 60% dearer per dose than Nutritech; Serving size not published on the shop page

### 4. Biogen L-Glutamine 500 g (Pharmacy big tub)

Biogen's 500 g L-glutamine is R452.99 at Dis-Chem, **R4.53 per 5 g**, 100 doses. It is the best-value size in Biogen's range: the 200 g is R6.37 per 5 g and the 100 g R10.00. Choose it if Dis-Chem is your shop and you want a large tub that lasts more than three months. No third-party testing was listed for this product in the sources we read, and it still costs about 70% more per dose than Nutritech, so it only makes sense if a pharmacy purchase matters to you.

Strengths: 100 doses per tub; Widely stocked at Dis-Chem; R4.53 per 5 g

Trade-offs: Dearer than Nutritech and Harvest Table; No testing listed for this product

### 5. Clicks (house brand) Clicks L-Glutamine Muscle Volume Revitaliser 125 g (Trial size)

Clicks' house-brand L-Glutamine Muscle Volume Revitaliser costs R130 for 125 g, **R5.20 per 5 g**, 25 doses. The name promises more than the evidence supports: glutamine does not measurably increase muscle size in healthy people. As a small tub to try glutamine for a month it is fine, and it is easy to find in Clicks stores across the country. But Nutritech's 300 g at the same store (R168) costs about half as much per dose and lasts more than twice as long, so it is the better buy if you plan to keep taking it.

Strengths: Low entry price (R130); In Clicks stores nationwide

Trade-offs: R5.20 per 5 g, nearly double Nutritech; Product name implies a muscle benefit the evidence does not support

### 6. Myprotein L-Glutamine Powder Unflavoured 500 g (Clear label)

Myprotein's unflavoured L-glutamine at Dis-Chem Living Fit states a 5 g serving (about 1.5 scoops) once a day. At R549.99 for 500 g that is **R5.50 per 5 g**. The clear serving instruction is useful, because many glutamine listings in South Africa give no serving at all. But you pay roughly double Nutritech's price per dose for an identical amino acid, and no third-party testing is listed on the page. Myprotein is a large UK brand; in South Africa it is easiest to find through Dis-Chem.

Strengths: Unflavoured, 5 g serving stated; 100 doses per tub

Trade-offs: R5.50 per 5 g; No third-party testing listed

### 7. Biogen L-Glutamine 200 g (Small Biogen tub)

We include Biogen's 200 g tub to show the cost of buying small. At R254.99 it is **R6.37 per 5 g**, 41% more per dose than the same brand's 500 g. If you take glutamine for longer than six weeks, the larger tub is the better buy. The 100 g tub is worse again at R199.99, or R10.00 per 5 g. The same pattern runs across most supplement ranges in South Africa: small tubs carry a large mark-up per dose, so buy the biggest size you will finish before the best-before date.

Strengths: Lower upfront cost than the 500 g; Same product as Biogen's 500 g

Trade-offs: R6.37 per 5 g; Only 40 doses

### 8. ATP Fitness L-Glutamine (Clean label)

ATP Fitness, a Cape Town brand founded in 2024, sells pure L-glutamine with no sweeteners or flavouring in a 200 g tub for R300, which is **R7.50 per 5 g**, the highest price per dose here and almost three times Nutritech. Its strength is a transparent one-ingredient label from a brand whose whole range follows that rule, which suits people who stack it into shakes or mix their own single-ingredient routine. On our cost-per-5 g criterion it ranks last, and given the weak evidence for glutamine we would not pay the premium unless clean labelling is your deciding factor.

Strengths: Single ingredient, no sweeteners or flavouring; Part of a single-ingredient range (creatine, beta-alanine, citrulline)

Trade-offs: Young brand (established 2024) with a smaller retail footprint than USN, Biogen or Nutritech; R7.50 per 5 g, the most expensive per dose here; No third-party sport certification published as of October 2026

## If you take glutamine, how much and when?

There is no proven performance dose. Retail labels typically suggest 5 g a day, mixed into water or a shake, and timing does not appear to matter. Glutamine is well tolerated at common doses in healthy adults. See a doctor first if you have liver or kidney disease, are being treated for cancer, take anticonvulsants, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are under 18. Don't use glutamine instead of enough daily protein: 20–40 g of whey protein already contains several grams of glutamine and glutamate.

## Is glutamine a doping risk?

Glutamine is not prohibited. The risk for tested athletes is contamination, which SAIDS says can occur even in products from well-known brands and pharmacies. Under strict liability, a positive test from a contaminated tub is still the athlete's responsibility. None of the glutamine products here showed third-party sport certification in the sources we read. Given the weak evidence, the simplest choice for a tested athlete, including a schoolboy rugby player, is to leave glutamine out.

## How we compared

1. We priced 8 L-glutamine listings from South African retailers (Dis-Chem, Clicks, Wellness Warehouse, Faithful to Nature, USN's and ATP Fitness's shops) on 27 October 2026, recording retailer, URL and date.
2. We calculated cost per 5 g as listed price ÷ tub grams × 5, the typical retail serving.
3. Ranking criterion, stated openly: cost per 5 g of plain L-glutamine, because the evidence does not justify paying for brand or extras.
4. We note label transparency (single ingredient, stated serving) and testing as stated by the seller, but they do not change the order here.
5. ATP Fitness is a featured partner of Healthnews24 and was priced and ranked with the same maths. Rankings follow our published method.

## Which should you choose?

- **Lowest cost per dose**: Nutritech L-Glutamine 300 g. R2.68 per 5 g, about R80 a month.
- **Large pack from a health store**: The Harvest Table L-Glutamine 450 g. R3.32 per 5 g and 90 doses.
- **Buying at Dis-Chem**: Biogen L-Glutamine 500 g. R4.53 per 5 g; avoid the 200 g and 100 g sizes.
- **Strictly one ingredient, no sweeteners**: ATP Fitness L-Glutamine 200 g. Single ingredient, at R7.50 per 5 g.
- **Building muscle**: None: spend it on protein or creatine. Glutamine does not add muscle in healthy, well-fed people; creatine and enough protein do.

## FAQ

### What is the cheapest glutamine in South Africa?

Nutritech L-Glutamine 300 g at R160.95 (Wellness Warehouse, via PriceCheck, October 2026) works out to R2.68 per 5 g. At Clicks it is R168 (R2.80). The Harvest Table 450 g pouch is next at R3.32 per 5 g.

### Does glutamine help build muscle?

Not in healthy people who eat enough protein. A 2019 meta-analysis in Clinical Nutrition found no significant effect of glutamine on body composition, aerobic performance or immune function in athletes. Creatine and adequate daily protein have much stronger evidence.

### How much glutamine should I take a day?

There is no proven performance dose. Labels typically suggest 5 g a day. Research on gut protection in the heat uses much larger doses scaled to body weight, and that work is still experimental, so do not copy it without medical advice.

### Is ATP Fitness glutamine worth it?

It is a clean single-ingredient product with no sweeteners, but at R7.50 per 5 g it is the most expensive we priced, almost three times Nutritech. Because glutamine's evidence is weak, buy it only if clean labelling matters more to you than price.

### Is glutamine safe?

It is well tolerated at common doses in healthy adults. People with liver disease, those being treated for cancer and anyone on anticonvulsants should speak to a doctor first. Tested athletes should remember that SAIDS strict liability covers contaminated supplements.
