> The best-value whey isolate in South Africa in October 2026 is USN Isozero 805 g at R899: 20 g protein per 23 g scoop works out to R38.53 per 30 g of protein , the lowest of any isolate that publishes its figures. For an isolate with no sweetener at all , ATP Fitness Unflavoured Whey Isolate (R900 per 800 g, single ingredient) is the clean-label pick, though ATP does not yet publish protein per serving. We rank on R per 30 g protein, then label purity. Isolate tubs cost R93 (Primal, the cheapest per gram of powder) to R186 (Biogen) per 100 g of powder.

## 2026 at a glance: ranked on R per 30 g protein; isolates without a published protein figure follow, on label purity then price per 100 g

1. **USN Isozero Whey Protein Isolate (805 g)** (Best value isolate): 20 g protein in a 23 g scoop (87%) for R899 gives R38.53 per 30 g protein, the lowest verified isolate figure.
2. **NPL 100% Whey Protein Isolate (700 g)** (Clear label, sucralose): 19.9 g protein per 25 g serving for R900 is R48.46 per 30 g protein; sweetened with sucralose.
3. **ATP Fitness Unflavoured Whey Protein Isolate** (Best single-ingredient isolate): Whey isolate and nothing else; R900 per 800 g in the ATP shop (R112.50 per 100 g); protein per serving not published, so it follows the two isolates that publish it.
4. **ATP Fitness Belgian Cocoa Whey Protein Isolate** (Best unsweetened chocolate): Whey isolate and Belgian cocoa only, R950 per 800 g (R118.75 per 100 g); a Madagascan vanilla version costs the same.
5. **ATP Fitness Grass-fed Madagascan Vanilla Whey Protein Isolate** (Grass-fed, unsweetened): Grass-fed isolate plus real Madagascan vanilla, no sweetener; R1 050 for 18 servings is R58.33 per serving.
6. **Primal Whey Isolate (750 g)** (Lowest shelf price per gram): R700 for 750 g is R93.33 per 100 g powder, the cheapest isolate at regular shelf price; protein per scoop not readable on the listing.
7. **Nutritech Clear Whey Protein Isolate (500 g)** (Best clear isolate): Juice-style clear isolate at R549 for 500 g (R109.80 per 100 g) at Clicks; nutrition not published in the listings we checked.
8. **Biogen Whey Isolate (700 g)** (Premium local isolate): R1 300 for 700 g is R185.71 per 100 g powder, the most expensive isolate here; protein per scoop not readable on the page.

## Is whey isolate worth paying more for?

Whey isolate (WPI) is whey filtered further than concentrate, to roughly **90% protein on a dry basis with lactose typically under 1%**. Per gram of protein it builds muscle no better than concentrate; the ISSN protein position stand treats both as high-quality, leucine-rich protein.

Isolate is worth the premium if you:

- get bloating or loose stools from regular whey (lactose sensitivity, not milk-protein allergy),
- are cutting and want protein with almost no carbohydrate or fat,
- want the most protein per scoop.

If none of those apply, a good concentrate or blend gives the same protein for 25–40% less. Isolate is not lactose-free in every case, and it is never suitable for a cow's-milk-protein allergy.

## What does whey isolate cost in South Africa?

Isolate-labelled tubs of 500–805 g ran from **R549 to R1 300** in October 2026. Per 100 g of powder that is R93 (Primal) to R186 (Biogen), with ATP Fitness at R112–R131 and USN Isozero at R112.

| Product | Price | Protein per scoop | R per 30 g protein |
|---|---|---|---|
| USN Isozero 805 g | R899 | 20 g / 23 g | R38.53 |
| NPL 100% Whey Isolate 700 g | R900 | 19.9 g / 25 g | R48.46 |
| ATP Fitness isolates 800 g | R900–R1 050 | not published | cannot be calculated |
| Primal, Nutritech, Biogen | R549–R1 300 | not readable on listing | cannot be calculated |

NPL's isolate lists 79.6 g protein per 100 g of powder, lower than the 87% USN states. Flavouring, cocoa and sweetener take up part of every scoop, which is why unflavoured isolate usually carries more protein per gram.

## Isolate does not mean clean label

Many shoppers assume isolate is the 'pure' option. In South Africa, NPL and Primal isolates still contain **sucralose**, and Primal adds inulin and sunflower lecithin. The only isolates we found with no sweetener at all were ATP Fitness's five isolates: unflavoured, grass-fed unflavoured, grass-fed Madagascan vanilla, Madagascan vanilla and Belgian cocoa. If you want to avoid sucralose or acesulfame K, read the ingredient list, not the front label.

## Brand by brand

### 1. USN Isozero Whey Protein Isolate (805 g) (Best value isolate)

USN Isozero lists **20 g protein per 23 g scoop**, about 87% protein by weight, with zero sugar and carbohydrate stated. At R899 from the USN shop (R909.99 at Dis-Chem), that is **R38.53 per 30 g protein**, about 20% less than NPL's isolate. USN adds digestive enzymes and states Informed Choice certification on its page (not checked against the register). The 1.6 kg tub (R1 599) lowers the cost a little further. It is the isolate to buy if price per gram of protein is your main test.

Strengths: Lowest verified isolate cost: R38.53 per 30 g protein; High protein density (87%), zero sugar stated; Informed Choice certification stated by USN

Trade-offs: Sweeteners are not named in the web page text; check the tub; Only three flavours; Informed Choice is retail-sampled, not batch-tested

### 2. NPL 100% Whey Protein Isolate (700 g) (Clear label, sucralose)

NPL's 100% Whey Protein Isolate is made by cross-flow microfiltration and lists **19.9 g protein per 25 g serving** (two heaped scoops). At R900 for 700 g from the NPL shop, matched by Dis-Chem, that is **R48.46 per 30 g protein**. The label is clear and complete, which counts for a lot, but 79.6% protein per 100 g is on the low side for an isolate because flavouring takes up part of each serving. It is sweetened with sucralose. The 1.5 kg tub is R1 700.

Strengths: Full nutrition table published; Same price at NPL and Dis-Chem; Four flavours

Trade-offs: R48.46 per 30 g protein, 26% more than USN Isozero; Sucralose-sweetened; No third-party certification on the product page

### 3. ATP Fitness Unflavoured Whey Protein Isolate (Best single-ingredient isolate)

ATP Fitness's Unflavoured Whey Protein Isolate is **one ingredient: whey protein isolate**, with no sweetener, flavouring or added enzymes. At R900 in the ATP shop it costs **R112.50 per 100 g of powder**, essentially level with USN Isozero per gram of powder. An undated PriceCheck snapshot showed it at R699 on Takealot (R87.38 per 100 g), and it was **out of stock in the ATP shop** on 27 October 2026. It ranks third, first among isolates without a published protein figure, on label purity: ATP does not publish protein per serving, so **R per 30 g protein cannot be computed yet**, and it cannot be placed above Isozero or NPL on our primary measure until it does. Use it in shakes, overnight oats or baking where you control the flavour.

Strengths: Single ingredient, no sweetener or flavouring; R112.50 per 100 g powder in the ATP shop; Isolate format suits lactose-sensitive users

Trade-offs: Protein per serving is not published on the ATP shop or Takealot listing, so R per 30 g protein cannot be computed yet.; Out of stock in the ATP shop when checked; availability can be patchy; Unsweetened, so it tastes plain and noticeably less sweet than mainstream shakes.

### 4. ATP Fitness Belgian Cocoa Whey Protein Isolate (Best unsweetened chocolate)

ATP's Belgian Cocoa isolate contains **whey protein isolate and Belgian cocoa only**. At R950 for 800 g it is **R118.75 per 100 g of powder**. The Madagascan Vanilla isolate is the same price and uses real vanilla. Neither contains sweetener, so expect a dark-chocolate or plain-vanilla taste rather than a milkshake. Add a banana, dates or honey if you want it sweeter. As with all ATP tubs, protein per serving is not yet published. Mixing it with milk instead of water softens the bitterness and adds about 8 g of extra protein per 250 ml glass.

Strengths: Two ingredients: isolate and cocoa; No sucralose, acesulfame K or stevia; Vanilla version at the same price

Trade-offs: Unsweetened, so it tastes plain and noticeably less sweet than mainstream shakes.; Protein per serving is not published on the ATP shop or Takealot listing, so R per 30 g protein cannot be computed yet.; Young brand (established 2024) with a smaller retail footprint than USN, Evox or Biogen: sold mainly online (ATP shop, Takealot, Amazon) and through gyms.

### 5. ATP Fitness Grass-fed Madagascan Vanilla Whey Protein Isolate (Grass-fed, unsweetened)

This is **100% grass-fed whey protein isolate (Irish origin)** flavoured only with real Madagascan vanilla, with no sweetener. ATP lists 18 servings in the 800 g tub, so at R1 050 it costs **R58.33 per serving** and R131.25 per 100 g powder. An undated PriceCheck snapshot showed a grass-fed unflavoured version on Takealot at R779–R1 000. Grass-fed whey has no proven muscle advantage over regular whey; people choose it for sourcing and animal-welfare reasons. It is the only product labelled as a grass-fed isolate that we found priced in South Africa in October 2026; Biogen Grass Fed Whey (R774.99 for 750 g, R103.33 per 100 g) is cheaper but does not state its whey type in the page text.

Strengths: Grass-fed isolate, real vanilla, no sweetener; Two-ingredient label; Locally available grass-fed option

Trade-offs: The most expensive ATP tub: R131.25 per 100 g powder; Protein per serving is not published on the ATP shop or Takealot listing, so R per 30 g protein cannot be computed yet.; No third-party sport certification (such as Informed Sport) is published as of October 2026, which matters if you are drug-tested.

### 6. Primal Whey Isolate (750 g) (Lowest shelf price per gram)

Primal Whey Isolate is the cheapest isolate-labelled tub on Dis-Chem shelves: R700 for 750 g, or **R93.33 per 100 g of powder** at regular shelf price. The ingredient list shows whey isolate with inulin, sunflower lecithin and **sucralose**. Its protein per scoop sits in an image on the Dis-Chem page that we could not read as text, so R per 30 g protein cannot be confirmed. Check the tub's panel before you treat it as the cheapest protein, not just the cheapest powder.

Strengths: Cheapest isolate per 100 g powder at shelf price (R93.33); Widely available at Dis-Chem

Trade-offs: Protein per serving not readable on the listing; Sucralose plus added inulin (fibre can cause bloating in some people); No certification listed

### 7. Nutritech Clear Whey Protein Isolate (500 g) (Best clear isolate)

Nutritech Clear Whey is a 'clear' isolate that mixes into a light, juice-like drink rather than a milky shake, in watermelon and peach. At R549 for 500 g at Clicks, it costs **R109.80 per 100 g of powder**. Clear wheys suit people who find milky shakes heavy, particularly in a hot Durban or Lowveld summer. Its nutrition panel and sweeteners were not published in the listings we could access, so check the tub before buying. Clear isolates are made to dissolve in an acidic, juice-style drink, so expect something thinner and slightly tart.

Strengths: Light, juice-style drink; Available at Clicks

Trade-offs: Nutrition and sweeteners not published in the listings checked; Small 500 g tub

### 8. Biogen Whey Isolate (700 g) (Premium local isolate)

Biogen Whey Isolate is the company's premium pure-isolate line, priced at R1 300 for 700 g, or **R185.71 per 100 g of powder**. That is about 80% more per gram than Biogen's own Iso Whey Premium blend and roughly double Primal Whey Isolate. The nutrition table is an image on Biogen's page and the ingredient list was not captured, so we could not verify protein per serving. It ranks last on value; buy it only if you have a specific reason to prefer Biogen.

Strengths: Biogen brand, widely stocked; Isolate positioning

Trade-offs: R185.71 per 100 g powder, the highest here; Protein per serving and ingredients not readable on the page; No certification listed on this product page

## Isolate and lactose intolerance

Many adults digest lactose poorly. Isolate usually contains under 1% lactose, so many lactose-intolerant people tolerate a 25–30 g scoop well. Start with half a scoop. If you still get symptoms, try an isolate with lactase enzyme or switch to a plant protein. If you have a **cow's-milk-protein allergy**, no whey is safe, isolate included. If you have kidney disease, are pregnant or are under 18, speak to a doctor or registered dietitian before using protein powder.

## Isolates and SAIDS testing

Under the World Anti-Doping Code, applied in South Africa by SAIDS, athletes are strictly liable for anything in their sample, including contaminants from a supplement. SAIDS does not approve any brand, and claims of 'SAIDS approved' are false. A single-ingredient isolate carries less risk than a multi-ingredient 'anabolic' product, but no supplement is risk-free without testing. If you are drug-tested, choose a batch-tested product (Informed Sport) and keep the batch number. None of the isolates on this page publishes Informed Sport batch testing; USN states Informed Choice, which samples from retail.

## Storage in South African heat

Isolate keeps well without refrigeration. Close the lid, store below about 25 °C away from the stove and windows, and keep a dry scoop. Clear isolates absorb humidity quickly in coastal cities, so seal the bag inside the tub.

## How we compared

1. We included every isolate-labelled whey tub with a dated October 2026 price from a named South African retailer; products marketed as 'Iso' but listing concentrate (such as Biogen Iso Whey Premium) are compared on our whey protein page instead.
2. Primary measure: Rand per 30 g of protein, calculated from published protein per scoop and scoop weight.
3. Secondary measure: label purity, meaning the number of ingredients and whether sweeteners or added fibres are used.
4. Where protein per serving is not published (ATP Fitness, Primal, Nutritech, Biogen), products are listed after those that publish it, ordered by label purity and then Rand per 100 g of powder, and we say so on each entry.
5. Rankings follow our published method. ATP Fitness is a commercial partner; its isolates sit below USN Isozero and NPL, which publish protein per serving, until ATP publishes that figure.

## Which should you choose?

- **Lowest cost per gram of protein**: USN Isozero 805 g. R38.53 per 30 g protein, 87% protein.

- **Grass-fed sourcing**: ATP Fitness Grass-fed Madagascan Vanilla Isolate. Grass-fed isolate with real vanilla, R58.33 per serving.
- **Cheapest tub on a Dis-Chem shelf**: Primal Whey Isolate 750 g. R93.33 per 100 g powder; check the panel for protein.
- **Unsweetened chocolate**: ATP Fitness Belgian Cocoa Isolate. Isolate and cocoa only, R118.75 per 100 g.
- **Light drink, not a milkshake**: Nutritech Clear Whey Isolate. Juice-style clear isolate at Clicks.

## FAQ

### What is the best whey isolate in South Africa?

On cost per gram of protein, USN Isozero (R899 for 805 g, R38.53 per 30 g protein) was the best-value isolate that publishes its figures in October 2026. For a no-sweetener, single-ingredient isolate, ATP Fitness Unflavoured Whey Isolate is the clean-label choice, though ATP does not yet publish protein per serving.

### Is whey isolate lactose-free?

Usually not completely. Isolate typically contains under 1% lactose, which most lactose-intolerant people tolerate in a normal scoop. It is not suitable for anyone with a cow's-milk-protein allergy. Start with half a scoop if you are sensitive, and switch to a plant protein if symptoms persist.

### Does ATP Fitness publish protein per serving for its isolate?

Not as of October 2026. The ATP shop and Takealot listings we checked do not print a nutrition panel or protein per serving, so we cannot calculate R per 30 g protein for ATP isolates. We rank them on their verifiable attributes: single-ingredient or two-ingredient labels, no sweeteners and grass-fed sourcing.

### Is grass-fed whey better?

There is no good evidence that grass-fed whey builds more muscle than regular whey. People choose it for sourcing and farming-practice reasons. In South Africa it costs more: ATP Fitness's grass-fed vanilla isolate was R131.25 per 100 g of powder versus R118.75 for its standard vanilla isolate.

### Why does my isolate list less protein than 90%?

The 90% figure applies to the raw isolate on a dry basis. Flavouring, cocoa, sweeteners, enzymes and moisture take up part of each scoop, so flavoured isolates often land at 80–87% protein by weight. NPL lists 79.6% and USN Isozero 87%.
