Electrolyte products in South Africa cost roughly R4.60 to R25 per serving, with a 32Gi electrolyte gel at about R35. The cheapest are Biogen Electrolyte sachets and Lifestyle Electrolyte Fizzy tablets at about R4.60 to R5.30 each; most sugar-free sachets sit at R10 to R15 (October 2026). • Most sugar-free sachets (USN, Nutritech, Resurge, Hydropop, REVIVE) cost about R10 to R15 per serving.
  • Rehidrat works out at roughly 288 mg sodium per sachet (our calculation from SAHPRA product information), about 14 to 16 mg per Rand.
  • Per-sachet sodium is not published on most South African retailer pages, so sodium per Rand cannot be compared across brands.

Prices below are per sachet, tablet or gel from retailer listings in October 2026, calculated by dividing pack price by serving count. Dis-Chem website specials are lower than list price and the Faithful to Nature and Takealot prices differ, so ranges are shown.

What about sodium per Rand?

This is the number that matters, and it is mostly unavailable. Most retailer pages for the products above do not print sodium per sachet; REVIVE, Biogen Electrolyte, USN Purefit Hydrator and Nutritech Hydrate keep their nutrition tables on the pack. The one figure we can calculate is for Rehidrat: the SAHPRA product information lists sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate that work out at roughly 288 mg sodium per 14 g sachet (our calculation), which is about 14 to 16 mg of sodium per Rand. Rehidrat is an oral rehydration salt indicated for diarrhoea, with about 12 g of sugars per sachet; it is not designed as an endurance drink.

When you shop, divide the sodium on the pack by the price per serving. A cheap sachet with very little sodium is a flavoured drink, not a replacement for sweat losses.

How do you choose?

  • Daily or light training: you rarely need an electrolyte product. See do I need electrolytes or just water.
  • Long, hot sessions: choose by sodium on the label and your sweat test; see how much sodium per hour.
  • Sugar-free preference: Nutritech, USN, Resurge and REVIVE are sugar-free; REVIVE Raw is unsweetened. Sachets with sugar add carbohydrate, useful during a race but not at a desk.
  • A homemade mix can cost a fraction; see homemade electrolyte drink.

High-sodium products are unsuitable with high blood pressure, kidney or heart disease or diuretic use. Check with your doctor first if any of these apply, or if you are pregnant or take regular medication. Children rarely need electrolyte products for school sport.
