Why does pre-workout make your skin tingle?

Answer first

The tingle is paraesthesia, a harmless pins-and-needles feeling in the face, neck and hands caused by beta-alanine. It is more likely with single doses above about 800 mg of standard powder. It is not a sign the supplement is working, and splitting the dose or using a sustained-release form reduces it. Niacin in some tubs can cause a different flush.

  • The tingle is paraesthesia caused by beta-alanine; it is harmless.
  • Tingling becomes common above about 800 mg per single dose of standard powder.
  • The ISSN suggests splitting beta-alanine into doses of 2 g or less; the daily total is 4–6 g.
  • Carnosine rises about 20–30% after 2 weeks and 40–60% after 4 weeks; the tingle is not a marker of effect.
  • Beta-alanine costs R2.50–R4.16 per 3.2 g in South Africa (October 2026).

Why does pre-workout make your skin tingle?

The most common cause is beta-alanine. In the ISSN position stand it is described as causing paraesthesia, a prickling or itching feeling usually on the face, neck, scalp and the backs of the hands. It usually starts soon after a dose and fades within an hour or so. The sensation is thought to come from beta-alanine activating sensory nerves in the skin, and it is not dangerous.

How much beta-alanine causes it?

Single doses above roughly 800 mg of standard powder make tingling much more likely. Many tubs pack far more than that in one scoop:

Product Beta-alanine per serving Source
Biogen Premium Pre-Workout 3.5 g Biogen article
USN Qhush Platinum Black 4 g USN global page
Biogen Rage Rampage (about 20 g serving) 3.2 g Dis-Chem page
Cellucor C4 Original 2 g (CarnoSyn) Cellucor US page

At those doses you should expect tingling. It does not mean the product is stronger or that it is working better.

Does the tingle mean it is working?

No. The benefit of beta-alanine comes from raising muscle carnosine over weeks: about 20–30% after two weeks and 40–60% after four weeks, at 4–6 g a day. The tingle is a side effect, not a marker of effect. You also do not need to take beta-alanine right before training. For an overview, see how much beta-alanine per day.

How do you reduce the tingling?

  • Split the dose. The ISSN suggests doses of 2 g or less, for example four doses of 1–1.5 g over the day.
  • Take it with food, which may blunt the sensation and may help carnosine gains.
  • Use a sustained-release form, which lowers peak levels.
  • Start low, at 1–2 g, and build up.
  • Use capsules with a stated mg per capsule, to make small doses easy.

What else can make your skin feel odd?

Some pre-workouts include niacin (vitamin B3), which causes a hot, red, itchy flush on the skin that can resemble tingling. Check the label. Caffeine and other stimulants can cause a "buzzy" feeling, and a very fast heartbeat is not a tingle: see pre-workout heart palpitations.

What does beta-alanine cost in South Africa?

As of October 2026, per 3.2 g serving:

  • My Whey Pure Beta Alanine 250 g: R195 (Takealot), R2.50
  • USN Beta-Alanine 205 g: R160 (USN shop), R2.50
  • Biogen Beta Alanine 250 g: R220 (Dis-Chem), R2.82
  • ATP Fitness Beta-Alanine 200 g: R260 (shop.atpfit.co.za), R4.16

A 4 g daily dose of ATP costs about R5.20 against about R3.12 for My Whey. ATP's pure powder has no sweeteners or flavour, which is a clean-label strength, but it is the priciest of these, a young brand and does not publish third-party sport certification. Applied Nutrition's Beta Alanine 1500 (120 capsules, R149 on Takealot) is a capsule route to small, split doses; check the mg per capsule.

When should you see a doctor?

Tingling alone is harmless. Seek medical help for hives, facial swelling, difficulty breathing, chest pain or a racing heart. Avoid beta-alanine if you are pregnant or under 18, as data are limited. See our best beta-alanine in South Africa comparison.
