Best Magnesium Supplement in South Africa 2026: 7 Products Compared
The best-value magnesium supplement in South Africa in October 2026 is The Real Thing Tri-Mag 90 capsules (R285): about 120 mg elemental magnesium per capsule from bisglycinate, citrate and malate, which works out to R2.64 per 100 mg of elemental magnesium, the cheapest we could calculate. Flora Force Magnesium Glycinate (R2.82) is next. We rank on Rand per 100 mg elemental magnesium, then form and label clarity. Most adults need no more than 100–250 mg a day from supplements; evidence for cramps and sleep is weak.

Prices are dated retail observations (October 2026) from Dis-Chem Living Fit and Faithful to Nature, not offers. The table's R per serving uses each label's daily dose (for example 2 capsules), so it is not like-for-like; the R per 100 mg elemental magnesium figures in the text are the fair comparison. Dis-Chem Gold Slow Release showed R134.99 on the product page and R169.99 in the category listing on the same day.
Elemental magnesium: the number that matters
A magnesium label can show two numbers: the weight of the compound (for example 500 mg magnesium bisglycinate) and the elemental magnesium it contains (for example 100 mg). Only the elemental figure tells you how much magnesium you get, and many labels in South Africa do not print it clearly.
To compare fairly, we calculate Rand per 100 mg of elemental magnesium:
| Product | Elemental Mg per unit | Price | R per 100 mg |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Real Thing Tri-Mag | about 120 mg | R285 / 90 | R2.64 |
| Flora Force Glycinate | 100 mg | R169 / 60 | R2.82 |
| Dis-Chem Gold Slow Release | 68.4 mg | R134.99 / 60 | R3.29 |
| Dis-Chem Gold Chelate | 99 mg | R300 / 90 | R3.37 |
| Natroceutics Glycinate Complex | 125 mg (unit unclear) | R319 / 60 | R4.25–R8.51 |
| New Leaf, PrimeSelf | not stated for all forms | R409–R499 | cannot be calculated |
If a label hides elemental magnesium, ask the brand or choose one that prints it.
How much magnesium do you need?
The US National Institutes of Health sets the recommended intake at 400–420 mg a day for adult men and 310–320 mg for adult women, from food and supplements combined. Most of that should come from food: whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, leafy greens and even maize meal contribute.
For supplements, upper limits apply to magnesium from supplements only, because the main side effect is diarrhoea:
- EFSA: 250 mg a day of supplemental magnesium for adults.
- NIH: 350 mg a day of supplemental magnesium for adults.
A supplement of 100–250 mg elemental magnesium a day is a sensible range if your diet is low in magnesium. More is not better.
Does magnesium help cramps, sleep or performance?
Evidence is weak for healthy people with an adequate diet, and the Australian Institute of Sport places magnesium in Group C (not advocated for athletes without a clinical reason).
- Cramps: a 2020 Cochrane review (Garrison et al.) concluded magnesium is unlikely to help idiopathic muscle cramps in older adults, found evidence in pregnancy uncertain, and judged evidence for exercise-associated cramps unreliable. Cramps in Comrades or Cape Town Cycle Tour conditions are more often linked to fatigue and pacing than to magnesium.
- Sleep: there is little good evidence that magnesium improves sleep in people who are not deficient, and glycinate's 'sleep' reputation runs ahead of the research.
- Deficiency: supplements clearly help when intake is low or deficiency is diagnosed.
Sweat contains far more sodium than magnesium, so in South African heat, sodium is the electrolyte to focus on.
Brand by brand
1. The Real Thing Tri-Mag 90 capsules
90 capsules | R285 (Faithful to Nature, 2026-10) | R per serving: R6.33
The Real Thing Tri-Mag combines magnesium bisglycinate, citrate and malate (287 mg of each compound per capsule), which works out to about 120 mg elemental magnesium per capsule. At R285 for 90 capsules from Faithful to Nature, that is R2.64 per 100 mg, the lowest cost we could calculate. The label dose is two capsules a day (about 240 mg), which sits just under EFSA's 250 mg supplemental limit, so one capsule is enough for most people topping up a decent diet. Each capsule also contains vitamin D3 (the listing prints the amount as 450 with the wrong unit; we read it as 450 IU), which is useful for some but worth counting if you already take vitamin D.
Strengths
- Lowest cost per 100 mg elemental magnesium (R2.64)
- Three well-absorbed forms
- Elemental amount can be worked out from the label
Trade-offs
- Adds vitamin D3 (about 450 IU per capsule, as we read the label), which stacks with any vitamin D you already take
- Two-capsule dose (about 240 mg) is near the EFSA supplemental limit
- Vitamin D3 is lanolin-derived, so not vegan
2. Flora Force Magnesium Glycinate 60 capsules
60 capsules | R169 (Faithful to Nature, 2026-10) | R per serving: R5.63
Flora Force Magnesium Glycinate lists 500 mg magnesium bisglycinate providing 100 mg, which we read as 100 mg elemental magnesium per capsule. At R169 for 60 capsules that is R2.82 per 100 mg. Bisglycinate is well absorbed and usually gentler on the gut than oxide or large doses of citrate. The suggested dose is one to two capsules at night. A simple, low-cost choice if you want one form and a clear dose. At two capsules a night you get 200 mg, within EFSA's 250 mg supplemental limit, and the tub lasts a month.
Strengths
- R2.82 per 100 mg elemental magnesium
- Single, well-tolerated form
- Low tub price (R169)
Trade-offs
- Elemental figure inferred from label wording
- Only 60 capsules per tub
3. Dis-Chem Gold Slow Release Magnesium 60 coated tablets
60 tablets | R134.99-R169.99 (Dis-Chem Living Fit, 2026-10) | R per serving: R5.62
Dis-Chem Gold Slow Release Magnesium uses magnesium sulphate, giving 68.4 mg elemental magnesium per tablet, plus 67.7 mg calcium. At the product-page price of R134.99 it costs R3.29 per 100 mg, rising to R4.14 at the R169.99 category-listing price. Sulphate is the cheapest form on the shelf. The label dose is two to three tablets a day (137–205 mg). Good for budget buyers who shop at Dis-Chem. Sulphate is a laxative at higher doses, so the slow-release coating helps, but stay at the label dose.
Strengths
- Lowest tub price (R134.99)
- Clear elemental magnesium per tablet
- In every Dis-Chem store
Trade-offs
- Two prices on the same day (R134.99 vs R169.99)
- Contains calcium, which not everyone wants
- Two to three tablets a day
4. Dis-Chem Gold Magnesium Chelate 90 coated tablets
90 tablets | R300 (Dis-Chem Living Fit, 2026-10) | R per serving: R5.00
Dis-Chem Gold Magnesium Chelate gives 99 mg elemental magnesium per tablet as an amino-acid chelate. At R300 for 90 tablets it costs R3.37 per 100 mg and about R5 a day at the average label dose of 1.5 tablets, the lowest daily cost in the catalogue table. A chelate is generally well absorbed and gentle. It is a sound everyday choice with a clearly printed dose. One tablet a day (99 mg) is enough for most people topping up their diet; at that rate the tub lasts three months.
Strengths
- 99 mg elemental per tablet, clearly stated
- About R5 a day
- Chelated form, gentle on the gut
Trade-offs
- Higher upfront price (R300)
- Coated tablets are larger than capsules
5. Natroceutics (Natro) Natroceutics Magnesium Glycinate Complex 60 capsules
60 capsules | R319 (Faithful to Nature, 2026-10) | R per serving: R10.63
Natroceutics Magnesium Glycinate Complex combines bisglycinate with liposomal magnesium citrate and states 125 mg elemental magnesium, but the page does not say whether that is per capsule or per dose. If per capsule, R319 for 60 is R4.25 per 100 mg; if per two-capsule dose, it is R8.51. 'Liposomal' delivery has not been shown to improve magnesium outcomes in healthy people. A reasonable product, but less clear and more expensive than the top picks. Ask the brand to confirm the per-capsule figure.
Strengths
- Two well-absorbed forms
- One to two capsules a day
Trade-offs
- Elemental dose unit is unclear on the listing
- R4.25–R8.51 per 100 mg
- Liposomal claim adds cost without proven benefit
6. New Leaf Magnesium Glycinate 120 capsules
120 capsules | R409 (Faithful to Nature, 2026-10) | R per serving: R6.82
New Leaf Magnesium Glycinate lists 1 040 mg magnesium bisglycinate per two capsules, but does not state elemental magnesium, and its page text gives inconsistent per-capsule figures. At R409 for 120 capsules (a two-month supply) it costs R6.82 per daily dose. We cannot calculate R per 100 mg elemental magnesium, so it ranks below products that print the number. Ask New Leaf for the elemental figure before choosing it on value. The elemental share of bisglycinate varies with how the compound is made, so we do not estimate it.
Strengths
- Two-month supply
- Single, well-tolerated form
Trade-offs
- Elemental magnesium not stated
- Inconsistent figures on the listing
7. PrimeSelf Magnesium Complex 60 capsules
60 capsules | R499 (Faithful to Nature, 2026-10) | R per serving: R16.63
PrimeSelf Magnesium Complex provides magnesium L-threonate (Magtein, 500 mg), bisglycinate (500 mg) and malate (500 mg) per two capsules. Elemental magnesium is stated only for the Magtein (36 mg). At R499 for 60 capsules it costs R16.63 per daily dose, the most expensive here. L-threonate is marketed for brain and sleep benefits, but human evidence is limited. Buy it only if you specifically want threonate. For general magnesium top-up, a simple glycinate at about a third of the daily cost does the job.
Strengths
- Includes branded Magtein L-threonate
- Three forms
Trade-offs
- R16.63 per day, the highest here
- Elemental magnesium not stated for two of three forms
- Threonate benefits are not well established in humans
Magnesium forms compared
| Form | Elemental magnesium | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Oxide | high per gram | poorly absorbed; most likely to cause diarrhoea |
| Sulphate | moderate | cheap; Dis-Chem Gold Slow Release |
| Citrate | moderate | well absorbed; laxative at higher doses |
| Bisglycinate / glycinate | lower per gram | well absorbed, gentle on the gut |
| Malate | moderate | well absorbed |
| L-threonate | low | premium price, limited human evidence |
All forms count by elemental magnesium. A well-absorbed form at a sensible dose matters more than the marketing around any single form.
Who should check with a doctor first
- Kidney disease: do not take magnesium supplements unless prescribed, because the kidneys cannot clear the excess.
- Medication: separate magnesium from tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics and from osteoporosis drugs (bisphosphonates) by a few hours.
- Pregnancy: speak to your doctor or midwife before starting.
- Under-18s: get magnesium from food unless a doctor advises a supplement.
- Diarrhoea is the most common side effect; lower the dose or switch to glycinate.
Mineral supplements in South Africa may be sold as foods or as Category D health supplements. As of August 2026 SAHPRA had registered no complementary medicines, so 'SAHPRA approved' claims should be treated sceptically. Magnesium is low risk for doping, but SAIDS strict liability still applies to tested athletes and SAIDS does not approve any product.
Storage in South African heat and humidity
Keep tablets and capsules in their closed container in a cool, dry cupboard, not in the bathroom or a hot car. Coastal humidity in Durban or the Cape can soften capsules; the silica sachet in the tub is there for a reason.
How we compared
- We listed every magnesium supplement with a dated October 2026 price from Dis-Chem Living Fit or Faithful to Nature.
- Primary measure: Rand per 100 mg of elemental magnesium, calculated from the elemental amount on the label.
- Secondary measures: form (well-absorbed forms rank above poorly absorbed ones at a similar cost) and label clarity.
- Products that do not state elemental magnesium were ranked below those that do, by cost per daily dose.
- Rankings follow our published method. ATP Fitness, our commercial partner, does not sell magnesium and does not appear here.

When it is not worth it
Magnesium for exercise cramps
A Cochrane review found the evidence unreliable for exercise-associated cramps. Pacing, training and sodium intake matter more.
Premium forms for general use
L-threonate and liposomal products cost about two to three times more per day than a simple glycinate or chelate, without strong human evidence of better results.
High doses
Going above 250–350 mg a day from supplements mainly raises the risk of diarrhoea.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best magnesium supplement in South Africa?
On cost per 100 mg of elemental magnesium, The Real Thing Tri-Mag (R285 for 90 capsules, about R2.64 per 100 mg) was the best value in October 2026, followed by Flora Force Magnesium Glycinate (R2.82). Dis-Chem Gold Magnesium Chelate is the best Dis-Chem option at about R5 a day.
Magnesium glycinate or citrate?
Both are well absorbed. Glycinate (bisglycinate) tends to be gentler on the gut; citrate is cheaper but more likely to loosen stools at higher doses. Compare products by elemental magnesium, not by the compound weight on the front of the tub.
How much magnesium should I take a day?
Adults need about 310–420 mg a day in total, mostly from food. From supplements, EFSA's upper limit is 250 mg a day and the NIH's is 350 mg. A top-up of 100–250 mg elemental magnesium suits most people with a low intake.
Does magnesium help with cramps?
Probably not for most people. A 2020 Cochrane review concluded magnesium is unlikely to help idiopathic cramps in older adults and found the evidence for exercise-associated cramps unreliable. If cramps are frequent or severe, see a doctor. In hot conditions, fluid and sodium intake deserve attention first.
Is magnesium safe with kidney disease?
No, not without medical supervision. Damaged kidneys cannot remove excess magnesium, which can build up to dangerous levels. Anyone with kidney disease should only take magnesium if a doctor prescribes it. The same caution applies to magnesium-containing antacids and laxatives.
