Are supplement subscriptions worth it in South Africa?
Subscriptions rarely beat shopping around in South Africa. A hypothetical 10% subscribe discount on ATP Fitness creatine (R500 for 600 g) still leaves it at about R3.75 per 5 g, against R2.22 for the cheapest tub we found. Subscriptions suit stable, daily-use products you finish on schedule, but lock-in and stockpiling can cost more than the discount saves.
- A hypothetical 10% subscribe discount on ATP Fitness creatine 600 g (R500) gives about R3.75 per 5 g, against R2.22 per 5 g for the cheapest tub found (October 2026).
- At 5 g a day a 600 g creatine tub lasts about 120 days, so monthly delivery would stockpile it.
- CPA section 14: a consumer can cancel a fixed-term agreement on 20 business days' written notice; suppliers must give renewal notice 40-80 business days before the term ends.
- Online purchases generally carry a seven-day cooling-off right under the ECTA, with exclusions.
What do you get with a subscription?
A subscription ships a product on a schedule, usually at a discount or with free delivery, in return for ongoing payment. We did not verify specific subscription schemes at South African supplement retailers in October 2026, so the examples below are hypothetical and use real shelf prices.
Does a discount beat shopping around?
Usually not, because price differences between sellers are larger than typical subscription discounts. Examples at October 2026 prices:
| Product | Shelf price | With a hypothetical 10% discount | Cheapest alternative found |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creatine 600 g, ATP Fitness | R500, R4.17 per 5 g | R450, about R3.75 per 5 g | Pure Natural Options 500 g, R2.22 per 5 g |
| Creatine 250 g, ATP Fitness | R270, R5.40 per 5 g | R243, about R4.86 per 5 g | Nutritech 500 g, about R2.50 per 5 g |
| Whey blend 1 kg, NPL Platinum Whey Plus | R490, about R23.52 per 30 g protein | R441, about R21.17 | Already low; check sale prices |
Retailer gaps of 40-80% on identical products exist, and undated PriceCheck snapshots showed Takealot pricing some ATP products about 20% below the brand's own shop. A subscription at the shop price can therefore be dearer than a one-off Takealot buy.
When does a subscription make sense?
- Daily, stable-price products you reliably finish, such as a vitamin D tablet (R2.67 a day for Dis-Chem Gold D3 1 000 IU) or a protein you use every day.
- Items with free delivery that offset courier fees.
- Flexible terms you can pause or cancel at any time.
When is it a poor deal?
- Slow-use products. At 5 g a day, a 600 g creatine tub lasts about 120 days. Monthly delivery would stockpile it.
- Products you are still testing. Wait until you know you tolerate them.
- Short-dated items (omega-3, probiotics) that go off before you finish them.
- Auto-renewals where you must remember to cancel.
What are your rights?
- Fixed-term agreements. Under section 14 of the Consumer Protection Act, a consumer can cancel a fixed-term agreement with 20 business days' written notice, although the supplier may charge a reasonable penalty. The supplier must notify you in writing 40-80 business days before the term ends if it will roll over, and after that it continues month to month. Section 14 covers fixed terms, so check whether your subscription is one.
- Online cooling-off. The Electronic Communications and Transactions Act generally gives a seven-day cooling-off right for goods bought online, running from delivery, with exclusions. Terms for specific retailers vary, so read them.
- Misleading claims. Section 41 prohibits misleading "save" claims.
This is general information, not legal advice.
How do you decide?
- Work out cost per dose (R per 30 g protein, R per 5 g creatine).
- Compare with the best one-off price from two or three sellers.
- Check the cancellation and pause terms before signing.
- Calculate how long a pack lasts and match the delivery schedule.
