The best vegan protein powder in South Africa depends on goal. For value, Faithful to Nature (FtN) Pea Protein Isolate 650 g (R148–R185, 15 g protein per 20 g, unsweetened) costs about R7.60–R9.50 per 25 g of protein. Among flavoured blends, USN BlueLab Plant 900 g (R399 on Takealot, R475 at Dis-Chem) is cheapest at about R17–R20 (October 2026).

  • FtN Pea Protein Isolate 650 g costs R148–R185 and works out at about R7.59–R9.49 per 25 g of protein (October 2026).
  • USN BlueLab Plant 900 g costs about R17–R20 per 25 g of protein (R399 on Takealot, R475 at Dis-Chem).
  • 32Gi, Biogen and NPL plant blends cost about R28–R30 per 25 g of protein.
  • Consumer Reports (2025, US): plant powders averaged about 9 times the lead of dairy-based ones.

What is the best vegan protein powder in South Africa?

It depends on whether you want the lowest cost and a single ingredient, or a flavoured blend. Rand per 25 g of protein is tub price divided by total grams of protein in the tub, multiplied by 25. Prices are October 2026.

Product Price Per 25 g protein What it is Trade-off
FtN Pea Protein Isolate 650 g R148–R185 R7.59–R9.49 single-ingredient pea isolate, 15 g per 20 g pea alone is low in methionine; plain taste
Raw Origins Yellow Pea Protein 400 g R169 about R14 single-ingredient pea; page states 75 g per 100 g serving size not given
USN BlueLab Plant 900 g R399 (Takealot) to R475 (Dis-Chem) R17.18–R20.45 pea isolate with pumpkin and watermelon seed protein; 20 g per 31 g sucralose, acesulfame-K, steviol glycosides
32Gi Plant Shake 720 g R530 R27.60 pea and rice isolates; 20 g per 30 g erythritol and stevia
Biogen Plant 700 g R400 R28.57 20 g per 40 g; lactose-, soy- and gluten-free claims sucralose and stevia; shared facility with milk, egg, soy, wheat, nuts
NPL Plant 710 g R440 R30.28 pea, rice, hemp, chickpea, pumpkin seed; 22 g per 43 g; adds B12 stevia and sucralose

Not rankable on protein cost: Primal Plant (R365), Youthful Living Plant (R520–R530), Pro Nutrition (R230–R249) and Nature's Nutrition (R390), because their protein per serving was not readable in the sources we used. We could not verify My Wellness vegan blends.

How do you choose?

  1. Amino-acid coverage: pea is methionine-limited and rice is lysine-limited, so a pea-and-rice or multi-source blend (32Gi, NPL, Primal) covers more. Plant powders also carry less leucine, so take about 30–40 g of protein per serving rather than 20–25 g (pea vs rice vs soy).
  2. Sweeteners: FtN and Raw Origins have none; the flavoured blends use sucralose, acesulfame-K, stevia or erythritol.
  3. Heavy metals: Consumer Reports' 2025 US testing found plant-based powders averaged about nine times the lead of dairy-based ones. We found no heavy-metal certificates from any of these South African brands, so rotate protein sources and avoid very high daily intake, especially in pregnancy and for children.
  4. Certification: none of the plant products carried a verified third-party sport certification. Youthful Living states it is an unregistered medicine not evaluated by SAHPRA, and 32Gi's "WADA compliant" wording is a brand claim.
  5. Allergens: check soy, milk and nut statements.

Which fits which goal?

  • Lowest cost and cleanest label: FtN Pea Protein Isolate.
  • Best-value flavoured blend: USN BlueLab Plant (buy on Takealot when it is R399).
  • Muscle gain: pick a blend, hit 1.6 g/kg total protein (plant vs whey for muscle).
