Best Plant Protein Powder in South Africa 2026: 9 Vegan Tubs Compared
The best-value plant protein in South Africa in October 2026 is Faithful to Nature Pea Protein Isolate 650 g: single-ingredient pea, 15 g protein per 20 g, at R11.38 per 30 g of protein (R185, or R148 on special). It is also the cheapest. For a ready-flavoured blend, USN BlueLab 100% Plant 900 g is best value at about R24.54 per 30 g protein. We rank on Rand per 30 g protein, then amino-acid completeness and label. Flavoured vegan tubs cost about R230–R530, and nearly all that name their sweetener use sucralose or stevia.

USN's plant tub was 16% cheaper on Takealot than at Dis-Chem when checked. ATP Fitness does not sell a plant protein and does not appear in this ranking.
Does plant protein build muscle as well as whey?
It can, if you eat enough. The ISSN protein position stand puts most people who train at 1.4–2.0 g protein per kg per day, and that target is the same for vegans. The gap is in quality per gram:
- DIAAS values (approximate) are above 1.0 for whey, about 0.9–1.0 for soy isolate, 0.7–0.8 for pea and 0.4–0.5 for rice.
- Pea is low in methionine; rice is low in lysine. Blending them covers each other's gaps.
- Plant proteins carry less leucine per gram, so aim for 30–40 g of plant protein per serving rather than 20–25 g, or about 2–3 g leucine.
Evidence level: moderate. Plant protein supports muscle gain when the dose and total daily protein are adequate.
What plant protein costs in South Africa
| Product | Price | Protein per scoop | R per 30 g protein |
|---|---|---|---|
| FtN Pea Protein Isolate 650 g | R185 (R148 special) | 15 g / 20 g | R11.38 |
| Raw Origins Yellow Pea 400 g | R169 | 75 g per 100 g | about R16.90 |
| USN BlueLab Plant 900 g | R474.99 (R399 Takealot) | 20 g / 31 g | R24.54 |
| 32Gi Plant Protein 720 g | R530 | 20 g / 30 g | R33.12 |
| Biogen Plant Protein 700 g | R400 | 20 g / 40 g | R34.28 |
| NPL Plant Protein 710 g | R440 | 22 g / 43 g | R36.34 |
Unflavoured single-ingredient pea is two to three times cheaper per gram of protein than flavoured blends. Flavoured blends carry only 50–67% protein by weight because sweeteners, cocoa, fibre and MCT oil take up the rest of the scoop. For comparison, the best-value whey (USN BlueLab) costs about R28 per 30 g protein.
Plant protein and heavy metals
Consumer Reports (US, October 2025) tested 23 protein products and found plant-based powders averaged about nine times more lead than dairy-based powders. South African brands were not in that test, and none of the products on this page publishes heavy-metal results. Practical steps: rotate between products, avoid very large daily servings, and be cautious in pregnancy and for children. Ask a brand for a certificate of analysis if you rely on plant protein every day. If you have kidney disease, are pregnant or are under 18, speak to a doctor or registered dietitian before using protein powder.
Brand by brand
1. Faithful to Nature (FtN) Pea Protein Isolate Powder (650 g)
650 g | R148-R185 (Faithful to Nature, 2026-10) | R per 30 g protein: R11.38 | R per 100 g powder: R28.46
Faithful to Nature's own-brand pea isolate is dehulled split yellow peas and nothing else, with 15 g protein per 20 g (75%). At the regular R185 for 650 g, that is R11.38 per 30 g protein, the cheapest protein of any kind in our October 2026 dataset; the R148 special drops it to R9.11. Peas are sourced from Canada, the USA or China. The taste is earthy and the texture a little gritty, so blend it with fruit, oats or a nut butter. Because pea is low in methionine, pair it with grains, rice or soy elsewhere in the day.
Strengths
- Lowest cost per 30 g protein in our dataset (R11.38)
- Single ingredient, no sweeteners
- Published protein per serving
Trade-offs
- Earthy taste, gritty in water
- Single-source pea: lower methionine and leucine than a blend
- No heavy-metal or sport certification published
2. Raw Origins Yellow Pea Protein 80% (400 g)
400 g | R169 (Faithful to Nature, 2026-10) | R per 100 g powder: R42.25
Raw Origins Yellow Pea Protein is also 100% non-GMO split yellow pea, packed in South Africa. The name says 80% protein but the page states 75 g protein per 100 g, so we used the lower figure: R169 for 400 g is about R16.90 per 30 g protein. That is about 50% more than the FtN pea isolate, but the 400 g tub is a cheap way to test whether you like pea protein. Serving size is only given as one to two tablespoons.
Strengths
- Single ingredient, vegan
- R169 entry price
- Packed in South Africa
Trade-offs
- Protein claim on the name (80%) and page (75%) differ
- Serving size not defined in grams
- About R5.50 more per 30 g protein than FtN pea
3. USN BlueLab 100% Plant Based Protein (900 g)
900 g | R399-R474.99 (Dis-Chem Living Fit, 2026-10) | R per 30 g protein: R24.54 | R per 100 g powder: R52.78
USN BlueLab 100% Plant uses pea protein isolate with pumpkin seed and watermelon seed protein. The page gives 20 g protein per serving in one place and 21 g per 31 g scoop in another; we used the lower figure, so R474.99 at Dis-Chem is R24.54 per 30 g protein. Takealot listed the same tub at R399, which brings it to about R20.61. It is sweetened with sucralose, acesulfame K and steviol glycosides, so it is a ready-to-drink shake, not a clean-label powder. No third-party certification is stated on the page.
Strengths
- Cheapest flavoured plant blend per 30 g protein (R24.54)
- Multi-source blend improves amino-acid balance
- Widely stocked
Trade-offs
- Three sweeteners: sucralose, acesulfame K and stevia
- Inconsistent protein figures on the page (20 g vs 21 g)
- Only two flavours
4. 32Gi Plant Based Protein Shake (720 g)
720 g | R530 (Dis-Chem Living Fit, 2026-10) | R per 30 g protein: R33.12 | R per 100 g powder: R73.61
32Gi Plant Based Protein uses non-GMO pea and rice protein isolates, the classic pairing that covers pea's low methionine and rice's low lysine. It lists 20 g protein per 30 g serving (67%), the highest protein density among the flavoured blends here, at R33.12 per 30 g protein (R530 for 720 g). It is sweetened with erythritol and stevia, with no sucralose. 32Gi describes the product as WADA compliant, which is a brand claim rather than a certification. It suits endurance athletes already using 32Gi fuel products.
Strengths
- Pea plus rice for a more complete amino-acid profile
- Highest protein density of the flavoured blends (67%)
- No sucralose or acesulfame K
Trade-offs
- R33.12 per 30 g protein, about 35% more than USN plant
- Erythritol can cause bloating in some people
- 'WADA compliant' is not a third-party certification
5. Biogen Plant Based Protein (700 g)
700 g | R400 (Biogen shop (biogen.co.za), 2026-10) | R per 30 g protein: R34.28 | R per 100 g powder: R57.14
Biogen Plant Based Protein lists 20 g protein per 40 g scoop, only 50% protein by weight, so a lot of each scoop is flavour, fibre and other ingredients. At R400 for 700 g that is R34.28 per 30 g protein. It is sweetened with sucralose and steviol glycosides. Biogen notes it is free from gluten, soy and lactose but made in a facility that handles milk, egg, soy, wheat and nuts, which matters for people with severe allergies. No certification is listed.
Strengths
- Easy to find at Dis-Chem
- Three flavours
- Free from gluten, soy and lactose ingredients
Trade-offs
- Only 50% protein by weight
- Sucralose and stevia
- Shared facility with common allergens
6. NPL Plant Protein (710 g)
710 g | R440 (NPL shop (npl.za.com), 2026-10) | R per 30 g protein: R36.34 | R per 100 g powder: R61.97
NPL Plant Protein blends pea isolate, rice concentrate, hemp, chickpea and pumpkin seed protein, with bamboo fibre, MCT oil and vitamin B12. A heaped 43 g scoop gives 22 g protein, the most per scoop here, but only 51% by weight. At R440 for 710 g that is R36.34 per 30 g protein. It is sweetened with stevia and sucralose. The five-source blend is a sensible amino-acid mix; the cost per gram of protein is the drawback. Dis-Chem matches the NPL shop price.
Strengths
- 22 g protein per scoop
- Five plant protein sources
- Added vitamin B12, useful for vegans
Trade-offs
- R36.34 per 30 g protein
- Large 43 g scoop at 51% protein
- Stevia and sucralose
7. Pro Nutrition Plant Protein (750 g)
750 g | R229.90-R249 (Takealot (via PriceCheck), 2026-10) | R per 100 g powder: R33.20
Pro Nutrition Plant Protein is the lowest-priced flavoured plant tub per gram of powder we found: R229.90 at Mopani Pharmacy and R249 on Takealot for 750 g, or R33.20 per 100 g at the Takealot price. Its protein per serving, ingredients and sweeteners were not published in the listings we could access, so we cannot calculate R per 30 g protein. Read the tub before you treat it as the bargain it appears to be. If the tub shows at least 20 g protein per 30 g scoop, it would be among the cheaper flavoured blends.
Strengths
- Lowest price per gram among flavoured plant tubs
- Available on Takealot
Trade-offs
- Protein per serving not published in listings checked
- Ingredients and sweeteners not captured
8. Primal Plant Based Protein (700 g)
700 g | R365 (Dis-Chem Living Fit, 2026-10) | R per 100 g powder: R52.14
Primal Plant Based Protein blends pea isolate, rice concentrate, pumpkin seed and chickpea protein, with bamboo fibre and MCT oil. At R365 for 700 g it costs R52.14 per 100 g of powder with a 35 g serving (about R18.25 per serving). The protein figure sits in an image on the Dis-Chem page, so we could not verify R per 30 g protein. It is sweetened with sucralose and steviol glycoside. No certification is listed on the page.
Strengths
- Four-source blend
- Lower tub price than most flavoured blends
Trade-offs
- Protein per serving not readable on the listing
- Sucralose and stevia
- No certification listed
9. Youthful Living Plant Based Protein (1 kg)
1 kg | R519.99-R529.99 (Dis-Chem Living Fit, 2026-10) | R per 100 g powder: R52.50
Youthful Living Plant Based Protein is rice protein concentrate (65%) and pea protein concentrate (17%) with added L-lysine, sweetened with stevia, at R519.99–R529.99 per kg (R52.50 per 100 g). Added lysine makes sense because rice is lysine-limited, but free amino acids also add nitrogen to a protein test, so the protein figure should be read with that in mind. The Dis-Chem page states the product is an unregistered medicine not evaluated by SAHPRA, classed as a health supplement. Protein per serving was not readable on the page.
Strengths
- 1 kg tub
- Stevia only, no sucralose
- Added lysine addresses rice's limiting amino acid
Trade-offs
- Protein per serving not readable on the listing
- Mostly rice protein, the lowest-quality single plant source
- Concentrates rather than isolates
Why some plant proteins carry a SAHPRA disclaimer
Most protein powders are sold in South Africa as foodstuffs under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act, with no pre-market approval. Some brands position products as Category D health supplements under the Medicines Act instead, and those must carry a statement that SAHPRA has not evaluated them. As of August 2026 SAHPRA had registered no complementary medicines, and the 2022 Supreme Court of Appeal ruling left the line between food and health supplement unsettled. A SAHPRA disclaimer is a legal label requirement, not a warning sign, and 'SAHPRA approved' claims on supplements should be treated sceptically.
Plant protein and SAIDS testing
Vegan athletes tested by SAIDS face the same strict liability as everyone else. SAIDS does not approve any brand, and 'WADA compliant' wording is a brand claim. None of the plant proteins here publishes Informed Sport batch testing. A single-ingredient pea powder carries less formulation complexity than a multi-ingredient blend, but no product is risk-free without testing.
Storage and mixing in South African conditions
Plant powders are shelf-stable; keep them sealed and dry. Pea protein thickens as it stands, so blend it rather than shaking, and use it in smoothies, oats, soups or baking. Adding a little rice, oats or soy milk to a pea shake improves the amino-acid balance.
How we compared
- We listed every plant protein powder with a dated October 2026 price from a named South African retailer.
- Primary measure: Rand per 30 g of protein, calculated from published protein per serving and serving weight, or from protein per 100 g where that is all the label gives.
- Secondary measures: amino-acid completeness (blends above single sources at a similar price) and label simplicity, including sweeteners.
- Products without a published protein figure were ranked by Rand per 100 g of powder, below those with verifiable figures.
- Rankings follow our published method. ATP Fitness, our commercial partner, has no plant protein and does not appear here.

When it is not worth it
Paying for a tub that is half filler
Several flavoured blends are only 50–51% protein by weight. If cost matters, compare R per 30 g protein, not tub price.
Rice protein on its own
Rice is lysine-limited with a DIAAS around 0.4–0.5. Use it in a blend, not as your only protein source.
Plant protein if dairy suits you and price matters
If you tolerate dairy and are not vegan, mainstream whey gives higher-quality protein at a similar or lower cost per gram than flavoured plant blends.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best vegan protein powder in South Africa?
On cost per gram of protein, Faithful to Nature Pea Protein Isolate was best in October 2026, at about R11.38 per 30 g protein. For a ready-flavoured shake, USN BlueLab 100% Plant was the best-value blend at about R24.54 per 30 g protein. 32Gi is the pick if you want pea and rice without sucralose.
Is pea protein a complete protein?
Pea contains all essential amino acids but is low in methionine, so its quality score (DIAAS about 0.7–0.8) is below whey. Pairing it with rice, oats or other grains across the day, or choosing a pea-and-rice blend, closes most of the gap.
How much plant protein do I need per shake?
Aim for slightly more than you would with whey: roughly 30–40 g of plant protein per serving, or enough to provide about 2–3 g of leucine. Total daily protein of 1.4–2.0 g per kg matters more than any single shake.
Do plant protein powders contain lead?
US testing by Consumer Reports in 2025 found plant powders averaged about nine times more lead than dairy powders. South African brands were not tested, and none on this page publishes heavy-metal results. Rotate products and avoid very large daily servings, particularly in pregnancy or for children.
Does ATP Fitness make a plant protein?
No. As of October 2026 ATP Fitness sells whey, collagen and single-ingredient performance products, but no plant protein. Its whey and collagen are animal-derived and not suitable for vegans. Vegans on a budget should look at Faithful to Nature or Raw Origins pea protein.
