Does caffeine boost fat loss?

Only slightly. Caffeine gives a small acute rise in energy expenditure, and 3–6 mg/kg (about 210–420 mg for a 70 kg adult) improves training performance, which may help you burn more. But tolerance builds and real-world fat loss is small compared with your diet. Caffeine capsules cost about R3.32 a 200 mg dose in South Africa (October 2026).

  • ISSN: 3–6 mg/kg caffeine is consistently ergogenic; about 9 mg/kg adds side effects without more benefit.
  • A 70 kg adult at 3 mg/kg takes about 210 mg; endurance time-trial gains are roughly 2–4%.
  • Ultra Caffeine 200 mg (60 capsules) costs R199 on Takealot, about R3.32 per capsule (October 2026).
  • Caffeine is on WADA's Monitoring Programme, not the Prohibited List; multi-ingredient stimulant products carry contamination risk.

How does caffeine affect fat loss?

Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, raising alertness and reducing perceived effort. It also stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, which gives a small, short-lived rise in energy expenditure and fat oxidation. Our evidence review classes fat burners and thermogenics as weak for real-world fat loss: caffeine and green tea catechins modestly raise energy expenditure, but the effect is small and no thermogenic replaces an energy deficit.

Habitual coffee drinkers also adapt, so the thermogenic bump shrinks over weeks. The larger benefit is indirect: caffeine improves endurance and, to a smaller extent, strength and power, so you may train harder in a deficit when tired. The ISSN position stand reports endurance time-trial improvements of roughly 2–4%.

What is an effective and safe dose?

The ISSN recommends 3–6 mg/kg of body weight, with benefits sometimes seen from about 2 mg/kg.

Body weight 3 mg/kg 6 mg/kg
60 kg 180 mg 360 mg
70 kg 210 mg 420 mg
85 kg 255 mg 510 mg

A cup of brewed coffee typically holds roughly 80–100 mg, though strength varies. Doses near 9 mg/kg add side effects without extra benefit. Many South African pre-workouts and fat burners contain 200–400 mg per serving, so add up every source, including energy drinks and tea.

What does caffeine cost in South Africa?

Ultra Caffeine 200 mg (60 capsules) is R199 on Takealot, about R3.32 per 200 mg capsule (listing via PriceCheck, October 2026). A cup of home-brewed coffee is cheaper and equally effective. Do not use bulk caffeine powder: very small measuring errors can be dangerous, and our evidence review flags pure powders as a particular hazard.

What are the drawbacks?

  • Sleep: late doses disturb sleep, and poor sleep increases hunger and weakens fat loss. Avoid caffeine in the 6–8 hours before bed.
  • Jitters, palpitations, anxiety, stomach upset rise with dose.
  • Dependence and tolerance: the more you take, the less each dose does.
  • Medical: avoid high doses if you have heart rhythm problems, high blood pressure or anxiety disorders, and limit total caffeine in pregnancy as your obstetrician advises. Under-18s should avoid high-dose stimulant products.

What about sport and drug testing?

Caffeine is on WADA's Monitoring Programme, not the Prohibited List, so plain caffeine is permitted. The risk is multi-ingredient stimulant products, where contamination and undeclared ingredients are common (fat burner safety).

How should you use it for fat loss?

Treat caffeine as a training tool, not a fat burner. Take 3 mg/kg about 60 minutes before a hard session, keep total daily intake sensible, and put effort into protein, calories and sleep. See do fat burners work and, for performance, pre-workout vs coffee.
