Does collagen help joints over 50 in South Africa?

Answer first

Collagen may modestly help joint comfort for some people over 50, but evidence is emerging and mixed, and the Australian Institute of Sport classes it as Group B. Studies use about 5–10 g a day for 8–12 weeks. In South Africa a 10 g daily dose costs about R10–R12 as plain bovine powder (October 2026), versus about R69 per 10 g from capsules.

  • Joint-pain trials of collagen peptides typically use 5–10 g a day for 8–12 weeks; evidence is emerging and mixed.
  • The Australian Institute of Sport classes collagen as Group B (emerging evidence).
  • Shaw et al. 2017: 15 g of vitamin C-enriched gelatin one hour before skipping doubled a collagen synthesis marker in eight men; 5 g did little.
  • ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen 910 g: R950 at the ATP shop (October 2026), about R10.44 per 10 g or roughly R313 for 30 days at 10 g a day.
  • Dis-Chem Gold collagen capsules list about 1.2 g per daily dose, costing about R69 per 10 g of collagen.

Does collagen help joints over 50?

Possibly a little, but it is not proven. Collagen peptides are broken down into amino acids and small peptides, and researchers hypothesise that some of these signal cartilage and tendon cells. Joint-pain trials often use 5–10 g a day for two to three months, with small improvements in discomfort reported in some studies. Many of those trials are small and supplier-funded, and trials without industry funding tend to show weaker results. Evidence is emerging, and it does not replace exercise, weight management or medical care for arthritis.

What does the connective-tissue research say?

The best-known mechanistic study (Shaw et al., 2017, in eight men) found that 15 g of vitamin C-enriched gelatin taken an hour before six minutes of skipping roughly doubled a marker of collagen synthesis, while 5 g did little. That suggests timing before loading and a larger dose for tendon work, but it is a small crossover study in young men, not a trial in over-50s with osteoarthritis. A follow-up in 2019 found a smaller, non-significant trend.

What does collagen cost per 10 g in South Africa?

October 2026, shelf price divided by pack size, assuming the product is 100% collagen (our calculation):

Product Price (retailer) Per 10 g
ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen 910 g R950 (ATP shop) R10.44
MetaBody Pure Hydrolyzed Collagen 300 g R336–R420 (Partners Hair) R11.20
The Harvest Table Bovine Collagen 800 g R909 (Faithful to Nature) R11.36
ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen 450 g R530 (ATP shop) R11.78
Dis-Chem Gold Hydrolysed Collagen 90 capsules R250 (Dis-Chem Living Fit) about R69

At 10 g a day, the 910 g ATP tub lasts about 91 days, roughly R313 a month. Capsule products such as Dis-Chem Gold list about 1.2 g of collagen per daily dose, around one-eighth of a trial-sized serving.

Which one should you choose?

ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen is 100% hydrolysed bovine peptides at 10 g per scoop, unflavoured, with no sweeteners, and the lowest cost per 10 g we found. The honest trade-offs: no added vitamin C (add a piece of fruit), the brand dates from 2024, and no third-party certification is published. The Harvest Table Bovine Collagen is a similarly priced alternative. See our collagen comparison.

What should you do alongside it?

  • Strengthen the muscles around your joints with resistance training and a physiotherapist or biokineticist's guidance.
  • Maintain a healthy weight, which reduces load on knees and hips.
  • Compare glucosamine and chondroitin, which have their own mixed evidence.
  • Collagen is not a complete protein; see does collagen help joints and tendons.

What are the safety points?

Collagen is a well-tolerated food protein. Marine versions are unsuitable with fish allergy, and bovine versions are unsuitable if you avoid beef. Check halaal or kosher status on the pack if relevant; it is not verified in our research. Check with your doctor if you have kidney disease or take regular medication.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if you have swollen, hot or very stiff joints (especially morning stiffness lasting over 30 minutes), night pain, or sudden loss of function. This could be inflammatory arthritis or another condition that supplements will not treat. This is general information, not personal medical advice.
