Healthnews24 editorial deskUpdated 10 products compared
Answer first

The best-value collagen in South Africa in October 2026 is ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen 910 g at R950: 100% hydrolysed bovine collagen peptides, unflavoured, 10 g per scoop, which works out to R10.44 per 10 g, the cheapest pure collagen powder we found. We rank on Rand per 10 g of collagen, then single-ingredient labelling. Most single-ingredient powders cost R10–R18 per 10 g; capsules cost several times more, about R34–R69 per 10 g of collagen. Evidence for skin and joints is still emerging.

Prices are dated retail observations (October 2026) from the ATP Fitness shop, Faithful to Nature, the Biogen shop and Dis-Chem Living Fit, not offers. Where the label does not state collagen grams, R per 10 g is price per 10 g of powder, which assumes the powder is all collagen. The table's 'R per 10 g' for blends and flavoured products is per 10 g of powder; the text gives per 10 g of collagen where it differs.

Does collagen work? What the evidence says

Collagen evidence is emerging, and the Australian Institute of Sport lists it in Group B. What we know:

  • Tendons and ligaments: Shaw et al. (2017) found that 15 g of gelatin with about 50 mg vitamin C, taken an hour before six minutes of skipping, roughly doubled a blood marker of collagen synthesis. A follow-up by Lis and Baar (2019) saw a smaller, non-significant trend. It is promising for injury rehab, not proven.
  • Skin: trials commonly used 2.5–10 g a day for 8–12 weeks. A 2025 meta-analysis of 23 trials (Myung & Park) found the benefits disappeared in non-industry-funded and higher-quality studies; industry disputes that analysis.
  • Muscle: collagen lacks tryptophan and is low in leucine, so it is a poor muscle-building protein. Do not count it as a protein shake.

Hydrolysed collagen is digested into amino acids and small peptides, some of which (such as prolyl-hydroxyproline) appear in the blood. Effects are indirect; collagen does not travel straight to your skin.

What is a fair price for collagen in South Africa?

Use Rand per 10 g of collagen: price divided by grams of collagen, times 10.

Format Typical cost per 10 g collagen Example
Single-ingredient bovine powder, large tub R10–R12 ATP 910 g R10.44; Harvest Table R11.36
Single-ingredient powder, small tub or on special R12–R18 Sally-Ann Creed R12.25 (special); Mojome R17.68
Branded or flavoured powder R14.60–R15.40 Biogen Peptan (unflavoured and flavoured)
Marine powder about R20 Sir Francis (one data point)
Capsules R34–R69 My Wellness about R34; Biogen capsules about R61; Dis-Chem Gold about R69

Most single-ingredient bovine powders in our dataset cost R10–R18 per 10 g. Capsule products give about 1.2 g of collagen a day, roughly one-eighth of the 10 g used in most powder trials, so a low price per day can hide a high price per gram.

How much collagen should you take?

  • Skin and general use: 2.5–10 g a day, taken consistently for at least 8–12 weeks.
  • Joints: trials often used 5–10 g a day.
  • Tendon and ligament rehab: about 15 g with roughly 50 mg vitamin C (for example an orange or a glass of fruit juice), 30–60 minutes before a short bout of loading exercise.

Vitamin C is needed for your body to make collagen, which is why it is paired with the dose. You do not need a product with added vitamin C if your diet includes fruit or vegetables.

Brand by brand

Best value and cheapest

1. ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen

910 g | R950 (ATP Fitness shop, 2026-10) | R per 10 g: R10.44

ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen is 100% hydrolysed bovine collagen peptides, unflavoured, with a 10 g scoop and nothing else in the tub. At R950 for 910 g (91 servings) it costs R10.44 per 10 g, the lowest figure for any collagen powder in our October 2026 dataset and about 8% below the next-cheapest pure bovine powder, The Harvest Table (R11.36). The peptides are manufactured in Brazil. It dissolves in coffee, tea, smoothies or water, and because there is no sweetener or flavour it suits people who take collagen every day in different drinks. It holds first place because it wins both parts of our criterion: lowest cost per 10 g and a single-ingredient label.

Strengths

  • Lowest cost per 10 g collagen in our dataset (R10.44)
  • Single ingredient: no sweetener, flavour, filler or added extras
  • Clear 10 g scoop, 91 servings

Trade-offs

  • Young brand (established 2024) with a smaller retail footprint than Biogen or Dis-Chem Gold: sold mainly online (ATP shop, Takealot, Amazon) and through gyms.
  • Takealot availability of the collagen could not be confirmed; the ATP shop is the reliable source, so check stock before you plan around it
  • No third-party certification or heavy-metal test results published; bovine source, so not suitable if you avoid beef
Best grass-fed bovine

2. The Harvest Table Bovine Collagen Powder 800 g refill

800 g | R909 (Faithful to Nature, 2026-10) | R per 10 g: R11.36

The Harvest Table Bovine Collagen is pure bovine collagen peptides from pasture-raised, grass-fed cattle, listed as a product of Germany. It gives 15 g protein per 16 g serving, and at R909 for the 800 g refill that is R11.36 per 10 g of powder and R18.18 per 16 g serving. The listing states halaal. The 800 g refill is sold at Faithful to Nature. One oddity: the listing URL mentions 900 g while the specification says 800 g; we used 800 g.

Strengths

  • Grass-fed, pasture-raised bovine source
  • Single ingredient with published protein per serving
  • Halaal stated on the listing

Trade-offs

  • About 9% more per 10 g than ATP 910 g
  • Pack size inconsistent on the listing (800 g vs 900 g)
Best multi-source blend

3. Beauty Gen Naked Collagen Complete 600 g

600 g | R699 (Faithful to Nature, 2026-10) | R per 10 g: R11.65

Beauty Gen Naked Collagen Complete mixes hydrolysed bovine collagen (89.6%), fish collagen peptides (10%) and undenatured chicken-cartilage type II collagen (0.4%), unflavoured, with 95 g protein per 100 g. At R699 for 60 servings of 10 g it costs R11.65 per 10 g. The tiny type II fraction is too small to compare with dedicated type II joint products, so think of it as a bovine powder with a little marine collagen. It contains fish, which matters for allergies. No branded peptide is named.

Strengths

  • Three collagen sources, unflavoured
  • R11.65 per 10 g
  • High protein content (95 g per 100 g)

Trade-offs

  • Contains fish (allergen)
  • Type II content is very small (0.4%)
Best smaller tub

4. ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen

450 g | R530 (ATP Fitness shop, 2026-10) | R per 10 g: R11.78

The same single-ingredient ATP collagen in a 450 g tub (45 scoops) costs R530, or R11.78 per 10 g. That is 13% more per gram than the 910 g tub, so buy the larger size if you take collagen daily. The smaller tub suits a first trial or a travel bag. It is still cheaper per 10 g than most branded powders on this list. Like the larger tub, it contains no sweetener, flavour or filler, so it mixes into coffee or smoothies without changing the taste.

Strengths

  • Single ingredient, unflavoured
  • Lower upfront cost (R530)
  • R11.78 per 10 g, below the market median

Trade-offs

  • 13% more per gram than the 910 g tub
  • No third-party sport certification (such as Informed Sport) is published as of October 2026, which matters for tested athletes.
Unflavoured, on special

5. Sally-Ann Creed Pure Hydrolysed Collagen 650 g

650 g | R796-R995 (special vs regular) (Faithful to Nature, 2026-10) | R per 10 g: R12.25

Sally-Ann Creed Pure Hydrolysed Collagen is hydrolysed bovine collagen only, unflavoured. At the special price of R796 for 650 g it costs R12.25 per 10 g, but at the regular R995 it rises to R15.31. The page cites 20 g protein per serving without defining the serving, so check the tub for scoop size. A reasonable buy when on special, average value at full price. Faithful to Nature runs specials often, so it is worth checking the price before you buy. No certifications are named on the listing.

Strengths

  • Single ingredient
  • Well-known local name in low-carb circles
  • Good value when on special

Trade-offs

  • R15.31 per 10 g at regular price
  • Serving size not defined on the listing
Best branded peptide

6. Biogen Platinum Collagen with Peptan, Unflavoured 280 g

280 g | R410 (Biogen shop, 2026-10) | R per 10 g: R14.64

Biogen Platinum Collagen uses Peptan, a branded bovine type I collagen peptide, and is the only collagen powder we found naming its peptide supplier. The unflavoured 280 g tub lists 10 g collagen per 10 g serving, so R410 is R14.64 per 10 g. Biogen states halaal certification on its range page and the product is easy to find at Dis-Chem. Biogen's own page is inconsistent on the serving (10 g vs 12 g) and pack size (280 g vs 320 g); if 12 g of powder is needed for 10 g of collagen, the cost rises to about R17.57 per 10 g of collagen.

Strengths

  • Named, branded peptide (Peptan)
  • Unflavoured, no sweetener
  • Halaal stated; stocked at Dis-Chem

Trade-offs

  • About 40% more per 10 g than ATP 910 g
  • Serving and pack size inconsistent on the Biogen page
Largest tub

7. Amandean Premium Collagen Peptides 1 kg

1 kg | R1 499 (Faithful to Nature, 2026-10) | R per 10 g: R14.99

Amandean Premium Collagen Peptides is bovine collagen only, from South American cattle and packaged in the USA, in a 1 kg bag with a free scoop. At R1 499 that is R14.99 per 10 g. The scoop weight is not stated on the listing. It is a clean product, but an imported one, and you pay about 44% more per gram than for ATP's 910 g tub. The listing claims over 90% protein but does not name a branded peptide.

Strengths

  • Single ingredient
  • 1 kg bag
  • Free scoop included

Trade-offs

  • R14.99 per 10 g
  • Scoop weight not stated on the listing
Best flavoured

8. Biogen Platinum Collagen with Peptan 320 g (Grape / Red Apple / Tropical)

320 g | R409.99-R419.99 (Biogen shop, 2026-10) | R per 10 g: R12.81

If you want a fruit-flavoured collagen drink, Biogen's Peptan range comes in grape, red apple and tropical. Each 12 g serving gives 10 g Peptan collagen, so R410 for 320 g works out to about R15.37 per 10 g of collagen (R12.81 per 10 g of powder, as the table shows). All three flavours use sucralose, and grape and red apple add polydextrose. It is the easiest collagen to drink with water, but not a clean-label choice. It contains no added vitamin C.

Strengths

  • Ready flavoured, mixes in water
  • Branded Peptan collagen, 10 g per serving
  • Widely available

Trade-offs

  • Sucralose in all flavours
  • About 47% more per 10 g collagen than ATP 910 g
Marine option

9. Sir Francis Marine Collagen (80 g / 250 g)

80 g (smallest of 80 g and 250 g) | From R164 (Faithful to Nature, 2026-10) | R per 10 g: R20.50

Sir Francis Marine Collagen is hydrolysed collagen from wild-caught cod skin (MSC-certified per the listing), with 9.2 g protein per 10 g serving. Faithful to Nature lists it 'from R164', which we assume is the 80 g pack, so about R20.50 per 10 g, nearly double ATP's 910 g tub and above every bovine powder in our table. There is no strong head-to-head evidence that marine collagen beats bovine; both are mainly type I. Choose marine if you avoid beef. The listing says it is made in Russia, processed in China and packed in South Africa.

Strengths

  • Marine source for people who avoid beef
  • Single ingredient
  • MSC certification stated on the listing

Trade-offs

  • About R20.50 per 10 g
  • Price-to-size mapping unconfirmed on the listing
  • Fish allergen
Capsule convenience

10. Dis-Chem Gold Hydrolysed Collagen 90 capsules

90 capsules | R250 (Dis-Chem Living Fit, 2026-10) | R per serving: R8.33

Dis-Chem Gold Hydrolysed Collagen gives 400 mg bovine collagen and 10 mg vitamin C per capsule, with a label dose of three capsules (1.2 g collagen) a day. At R250 for 90 capsules it costs R8.33 a day, which looks cheap, but works out at about R69 per 10 g of collagen. The 1.2 g daily dose is far below the 2.5–15 g used in most collagen trials. Capsules suit people who want something to swallow with other vitamins, but on dose and cost per gram, powder wins clearly.

Strengths

  • Convenient capsules, sugar free
  • Halaal stated on the listing
  • Available in every Dis-Chem

Trade-offs

  • About R69 per 10 g collagen, over six times ATP powder
  • 1.2 g a day is well below trial doses

Worked example: a 90-day supply at 10 g a day

Product Packs needed for 900 g Cost for 90 days
ATP Fitness 910 g 1 R950
The Harvest Table 800 g 1.1 about R1 022
Beauty Gen Complete 600 g 1.5 about R1 049
Biogen Peptan unflavoured 280 g 3.2 about R1 318
Amandean 1 kg 0.9 about R1 349
Dis-Chem Gold capsules (400 mg each) 25 tubs (25 capsules a day) about R6 250

At 10 g a day, the gap between the cheapest and a mid-priced branded powder is about R370 over three months.

Safety, halaal and SAHPRA labels

Collagen is a food protein and is well tolerated. Check the source: marine collagen is unsuitable with a fish allergy, and some 'bovine' blends include fish. If you need halaal or kosher, look for a named certifier on the tub. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, under-18s and anyone with kidney disease should check with a doctor or registered dietitian first.

Some collagen capsules (Biogen's, for example) state they are unregistered medicines with a SAHPRA number to be allocated on registration. That is a legal label requirement for Category D health supplements, not a safety warning: as of August 2026 SAHPRA had registered no complementary medicines. Claims such as 'FDA approved' on a collagen powder are a red flag.

Anti-doping and storage in SA heat

Collagen is low risk for doping compared with stimulant or 'anabolic' products, but SAIDS applies strict liability and does not approve any brand. None of the collagens here publishes Informed Sport batch testing. Store powder sealed in a cool, dry cupboard; it needs no fridge. Collagen peptides tolerate hot coffee, but humidity makes them clump, so keep the scoop dry.

How we compared

  1. We listed every collagen product with a dated October 2026 price from a named South African retailer.
  2. Primary measure: Rand per 10 g of collagen. Where the label states collagen per serving we used it; for single-ingredient powders without that figure we used Rand per 10 g of powder.
  3. Secondary measure: label purity, meaning single ingredient and no sweeteners or flavour systems.
  4. Where a retailer showed a special, the ranking uses the lowest dated price and the text gives the regular price too (Sally-Ann Creed is placed on its R796 special; at the regular R995 it would fall to R15.31 per 10 g).
  5. Capsule products were converted to cost per 10 g collagen from mg per capsule, and their daily dose was compared with trial doses.
  6. Rankings follow our published method. ATP Fitness is a commercial partner; it ranks first here because its 910 g tub is the lowest cost per 10 g in our dataset and is single-ingredient.

Which should you choose?

Lowest cost per 10 g

ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen 910 g: R10.44 per 10 g, single ingredient.

Prefer a flavoured drink

Biogen Peptan flavoured 320 g: 10 g collagen per serving, contains sucralose.

Tendon or ligament rehab

Any single-ingredient powder, 15 g plus vitamin C: Matches the Shaw 2017 protocol; ATP 910 g is cheapest.

When it is not worth it

Low-dose capsules

1.2 g a day is about one-eighth of a typical powder dose and costs six times more per gram.

Collagen instead of a protein shake

Collagen lacks tryptophan and is low in leucine. If your goal is muscle, use whey or a plant protein.

Paying extra for marine 'superiority'

There is no strong head-to-head evidence that marine collagen works better than bovine; both are mainly type I.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest collagen per 10 g in South Africa?

In October 2026 the cheapest collagen powder per 10 g was ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen 910 g, at R950 or R10.44 per 10 g. The Harvest Table Bovine Collagen 800 g (R11.36) and Beauty Gen Naked Collagen Complete (R11.65) were next. Capsules cost about R34–R69 per 10 g of collagen.

Does collagen actually work?

Evidence is emerging rather than proven. Small studies suggest 15 g with vitamin C before exercise may support tendon and ligament collagen synthesis. Skin results are mixed: a 2025 meta-analysis found benefits disappeared in non-industry-funded, higher-quality trials. Collagen is not useful for muscle building.

Marine or bovine collagen: which is better?

Both are mainly type I collagen, and there is no strong head-to-head evidence that one works better. Bovine powder is usually cheaper in South Africa (about R10–R15 per 10 g versus about R20 for marine). Choose marine if you avoid beef, but not if you have a fish allergy.

How much collagen should I take per day?

Most skin and joint trials used 2.5–10 g a day for 8–12 weeks. For tendon or ligament rehab, researchers used about 15 g with roughly 50 mg vitamin C, 30–60 minutes before exercise. One 10 g scoop of a single-ingredient powder covers most uses.

Is ATP Fitness collagen single ingredient?

Yes. ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen is 100% hydrolysed bovine collagen peptides with no sweetener, flavour or filler, in a 10 g scoop. It is sold in 910 g (R950) and 450 g (R530) tubs. ATP does not publish third-party testing for it.

Can I put collagen in hot coffee?

Yes. Hydrolysed collagen peptides dissolve in hot drinks and normal brewing temperatures do not destroy them. Unflavoured powders work best because they do not change the taste. Stir it into the cup rather than boiling it in a pot, and keep the scoop dry so the powder does not clump.
