Is L-carnitine worth taking for fat loss or performance?
For most healthy people, probably not. Meta-analyses of randomised trials find only a small average weight loss with L-carnitine, about 1.1–1.3 kg, concentrated in people with overweight or obesity and fading over time. Evidence for sports performance is mixed. We did not price pure L-carnitine for South Africa. Check with your doctor if you have kidney disease or take regular medication.
- Meta-analysis of 9 trials (911 adults): L-carnitine users lost about 1.33 kg more than controls, with the effect shrinking over time.
- A later meta-analysis of 43 trials found about 1.13 kg of weight loss, seen only in overweight and obese people.
- L-carnitine is not among the AIS Group A or IOC 2018 supplements with good performance evidence.
- We did not find a priced plain L-carnitine product for South Africa (October 2026).
Is L-carnitine worth taking for fat loss?
The honest answer is "a little, for some people, and not as a shortcut". Two meta-analyses of randomised trials give the best picture:
| Analysis | Trials | Average weight change vs control |
|---|---|---|
| Pooyandjoo et al. 2016 (Obesity Reviews) | 9 trials, 911 adults | -1.33 kg (BMI -0.47); effect smaller over longer trials |
| A later analysis of 43 trials (searches to February 2019) | 43 trials | -1.13 kg weight, -1.16 kg fat mass; seen only in overweight and obese people |
Body-fat percentage and waist circumference did not change significantly in the later analysis. About a kilogram or so over the length of a trial is real but small, and diet, activity and sleep matter far more. No "fat burner" replaces an energy deficit; see do fat burners work.
What about performance?
Evidence in healthy, well-fed people is mixed. L-carnitine does not appear among the supplements with good evidence in the IOC 2018 consensus statement or in the AIS Group A list (caffeine, creatine, beta-alanine, sodium bicarbonate, dietary nitrate and a few others). If performance is the goal, creatine and caffeine have far stronger support.
What forms and doses are sold in South Africa?
L-carnitine appears as a single product and as an add-on inside other products:
- USN Amino Energy 300 g (R259–R324.99): nine EAAs plus caffeine and L-carnitine tartrate; amounts unpublished on the shop page.
- Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Pre-Workout 330 g (R899.99, Dis-Chem Living Fit): acetyl-L-carnitine 375 mg per retailer pages.
- Fat-burner capsules, which often combine it with caffeine and plant extracts.
We did not find or price a plain L-carnitine powder or capsule in our research, so we give no per-dose cost. Compare any product on the milligrams of carnitine per day and the price per day, not the front label.
Is L-carnitine safe?
It is generally well tolerated in studies, with stomach upset the most common complaint. Because it is often sold with stimulants, check the whole label. Talk to your doctor before using it if you have kidney disease, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take regular medication. Drug-tested athletes should know that multi-ingredient fat-loss and pre-workout products carry the highest contamination risk; see pre-workout banned substances.
What should you do instead?
If fat loss is the goal, prioritise a modest energy deficit, enough protein and resistance training. Our protein for fat loss guide covers numbers. For more on this ingredient, see L-carnitine and fat loss. Product claims like "burns fat" must be backed by evidence at the stated dose under South Africa's advertising rules, so be wary of bold labels.
Under-18s should meet protein needs from food rather than amino-acid or fat-loss powders.
