Best Citrulline Malate in South Africa 2026: 5 Products Compared
Citrulline malate is studied at 6–8 g about an hour before training, and the evidence for more reps and less soreness is mixed. Pay for the dose, not the brand. In South Africa, My Whey Pure Citrulline Malate 2:1 250 g is the cheapest at R4.78 per 6 g (R199, Takealot, October 2026). Muscle Works costs R5.30 and ATP Fitness R6.72 (single ingredient, no sweeteners). Biogen (R7.92) and NPL (R8.62) are the pharmacy options. Plain powder costs far less per useful dose than most pump pre-workouts.

Does citrulline malate work, and how much do you need?
Citrulline is converted to arginine in the kidneys, raising nitric oxide more reliably than arginine itself. Proposed benefits are a few extra reps in high-volume sets and less soreness. A 2021 critical review (Gough et al., European Journal of Applied Physiology) rated the evidence as equivocal, with small effects and doubts about whether products contain the citrulline-to-malate ratio on the label. Our evidence rating is Emerging.
If you want to try it, use the dose from the studies: 6–8 g citrulline malate about 60 minutes before training, of which roughly two-thirds is L-citrulline in a 2:1 product, if the label ratio is accurate. The 2018 Harty review of pre-workouts found citrulline is often included at well below the effective dose, which is why plain powder, where you control the scoop, makes sense.
What does a dose of citrulline malate cost in South Africa?
Cost per 6 g = price ÷ tub grams × 6. Twelve training days a month uses 72 g.
| Product | Price (Oct 2026) | R per 6 g | R per 8 g | R for 12 sessions at 6 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| My Whey 250 g | R199 | R4.78 | R6.37 | R57 |
| Muscle Works 180 g | R159 | R5.30 | R7.07 | R64 |
| ATP Fitness 250 g | R280 | R6.72 | R8.96 | R81 |
| Biogen 250 g | R329.99 | R7.92 | R10.56 | R95 |
| NPL 240 g | R344.99 | R8.62 | R11.50 | R103 |
My Whey's larger bags on Takealot cut the cost further: 500 g at R289 (R3.47 per 6 g) and 1 kg at R389 (about R2.33 per 6 g).
Brand by brand
1. My Whey Pure Citrulline Malate 2:1 Powder 250 g
250 g | R199 (Takealot (listing via PriceCheck), 2026-10) | R per 6 g: R4.78
My Whey's Pure Citrulline Malate 2:1 is R199 for 250 g on Takealot, R4.78 per 6 g and about 41 doses. It also states the 2:1 ratio, which tells you roughly how much L-citrulline you get (about two-thirds of each scoop, if the ratio is accurate). Larger bags are cheaper still: R289 for 500 g and R389 for 1 kg, which brings a 6 g dose to about R2.33. The listing gives little else (no testing or origin), and it is sold mainly through Takealot.
Strengths
- R4.78 per 6 g, the lowest at 250 g
- 2:1 ratio stated
- Bulk bags drop to about R2.33 per 6 g
Trade-offs
- Little product information beyond the ratio
- No third-party testing listed
2. Muscle Works Citrulline Malate 180 g
180 g | R159 (Takealot (listing via PriceCheck), 2026-10) | R per 6 g: R5.30
Muscle Works' citrulline malate costs R159 for 180 g on Takealot, R5.30 per 6 g, 30 doses. It is the lowest upfront price if you want to try citrulline before committing to a bigger tub. The listing does not state the citrulline-to-malate ratio or a serving size, so you cannot be sure how much L-citrulline each scoop contains. That matters because the 2021 Gough review raised doubts about whether labelled ratios are accurate across the market. Weigh 6 g on a kitchen scale for the first few doses, then note how full your scoop is.
Strengths
- Lowest entry price (R159)
- R5.30 per 6 g
Trade-offs
- Ratio and serving not stated
- No testing information
3. ATP Fitness Citrulline Malate
250 g | R280 (ATP Fitness shop, 2026-10) | R per 6 g: R6.72
ATP Fitness sells citrulline malate as a single ingredient with no sweeteners or flavouring: R280 for 250 g, R6.72 per 6 g (about 41 doses). It costs about R1.94 per dose more than My Whey but R1.20 less than Biogen and R1.90 less than NPL, so it sits between the budget Takealot tubs and the pharmacy brands on price. It pairs with ATP's beta-alanine in a DIY pre-workout. The ratio is not stated in the product data we hold, so check the label if the exact L-citrulline content matters to you.
Strengths
- Single ingredient, no sweeteners or flavouring
- Cheaper per 6 g than the Biogen and NPL pharmacy tubs
- Fits a DIY pre-workout with ATP beta-alanine
Trade-offs
- R6.72 per 6 g, about 41% more than My Whey
- Young brand (established 2024) with a smaller retail footprint, and stock can sell out online
- No third-party sport certification published as of October 2026
4. Biogen L-Citrulline Malate Powder Unflavoured 250 g
250 g | R330 (Dis-Chem Living Fit, 2026-10) | R per 6 g: R7.92
Biogen's unflavoured L-citrulline malate is R329.99 for 250 g at Dis-Chem Living Fit, R7.92 per 6 g. The label uses a 4.8 g scoop (about R6.34 per scoop) and sets a daily limit at that scoop, which is below the 6–8 g used in most studies. The Dis-Chem page notes the product has not been evaluated by SAHPRA, a standard disclaimer for this category. No third-party testing is listed. If you follow the research dose instead of the label, you will use about 1.25 scoops per session and the tub lasts roughly 41 sessions.
Strengths
- Unflavoured
- Sold at Dis-Chem
- Clear scoop size (4.8 g)
Trade-offs
- Label dose is below the 6–8 g studied
- R7.92 per 6 g
- No testing listed for this product
5. NPL L-Citrulline Malate Powder 240 g
240 g | R345 (Dis-Chem Living Fit, 2026-10) | R per 6 g: R8.62
NPL's L-citrulline malate states a 2:1 ratio and a 6 g rounded scoop, which matches the bottom of the research range. That label clarity is its strength. At R344.99 for 240 g at Dis-Chem Living Fit it is R8.62 per 6 g, about 40 doses, and the most expensive here, at 80% more than My Whey for the same dose. No third-party testing is listed. Choose it if you shop at Dis-Chem and want a scoop that already matches the studied dose, without weighing anything.
Strengths
- 2:1 ratio stated
- 6 g scoop matches research doses
- Sold at Dis-Chem
Trade-offs
- R8.62 per 6 g, the highest here
- No testing listed
Is citrulline malate safe?
It is well tolerated at studied doses; mild stomach upset is the most common complaint. There is little research in pregnancy, breastfeeding, under-18s or kidney disease, so speak to a doctor first in those cases. Because it raises nitric oxide, it can add to the blood-pressure-lowering effect of nitrate heart medicines, PDE5 inhibitors (such as sildenafil) and blood-pressure tablets, so speak to your doctor if you take any of these. Citrulline is not prohibited in sport, but SAIDS strict liability still applies to contamination, and none of these five products listed third-party sport certification in the sources we read.
Plain citrulline or a pump pre-workout?
Most pump pre-workouts sold in South Africa do not publish their citrulline dose, and some that do sit below 6 g. Biogen Premium Pre-Workout lists 4 g citrulline malate per serving; USN Qhush Platinum Black's global page lists 6 g. A 6 g scoop of plain powder costs R4.78–R8.62, so even a stimulant-free pump product at R10–R12 a serving costs more and shows you less. Unflavoured citrulline tastes sour; mixing it into juice or a flavoured drink helps.
How we compared
- We priced 5 citrulline malate products sold in South Africa (Dis-Chem Living Fit, ATP Fitness's shop, and Takealot via PriceCheck) on 27 October 2026.
- We calculated cost per 6 g (the bottom of the 6–8 g research range) as price ÷ tub grams × 6.
- Ranking criterion, stated openly: cost per 6 g of citrulline malate, with label clarity (stated ratio and scoop) as a tie-break.
- Evidence and dosing follow Gough et al. 2021 and the Harty et al. 2018 pre-workout review.
- ATP Fitness is a featured partner of Healthnews24 and was priced and ranked with the same maths. Rankings follow our published method.

When it is not worth it
Doses under 6 g
Most studies use 6–8 g. A 2–4 g sprinkle in a pre-workout is unlikely to do much.
Arginine instead of citrulline
Oral arginine is broken down heavily before it reaches the blood; citrulline raises arginine more reliably.
Paying pre-workout prices for a pump
Stimulant-free pump tubs cost more per serving than plain citrulline and rarely show the dose.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest citrulline malate in South Africa?
My Whey Pure Citrulline Malate 2:1 250 g at R199 on Takealot is R4.78 per 6 g as of October 2026. Its 1 kg bag (R389) works out to about R2.33 per 6 g. Muscle Works 180 g is R5.30 and ATP Fitness 250 g is R6.72.
How much citrulline malate should I take?
Studies typically use 6–8 g of citrulline malate about 60 minutes before training. In a 2:1 product roughly two-thirds of that is L-citrulline, if the label ratio is accurate. Results are mixed, so judge it over a few weeks of training rather than one session.
Citrulline malate or L-citrulline?
Both raise arginine and nitric oxide. Citrulline malate is citrulline bound to malic acid, so you need more grams for the same citrulline. A 2:1 product is about two-thirds citrulline by weight. Compare products on citrulline content, and be aware that labelled ratios are not always accurate.
Does citrulline work?
Evidence is emerging and mixed. Some trials report a few more reps in high-volume sets and less soreness; others find nothing. A 2021 critical review called the evidence equivocal. It is reasonable to try at 6–8 g, but it is not in the same league as creatine or caffeine.
Is citrulline safe with blood-pressure medicine?
Speak to your doctor first. Citrulline raises nitric oxide and may add to the effect of blood-pressure tablets, nitrate heart medicines and PDE5 inhibitors such as sildenafil, which could make your blood pressure drop too far. Healthy adults tolerate studied doses well; mild stomach upset is the most common side effect.
