Do women over 40 need protein powder in South Africa?

Answer first

Not strictly, but many women over 40 find it a convenient way to reach a higher protein target. Lean mass and strength decline gradually from midlife, and 1.4 to 2.0 g/kg a day with resistance training is the evidence-based range. Food comes first. A whey isolate or a leucine-rich blend helps when meals fall short.

  • Morton 2018 (49 RCTs): protein supplementation with resistance training added about 0.3 kg fat-free mass and about 2.5 kg one-rep-max strength on average.
  • ISSN range for people who train is 1.4 to 2.0 g/kg/day; per meal about 0.4 g/kg in older adults.
  • October 2026 isolate prices per 100 g: Primal R93.33, ATP Unflavoured R112.50, NPL R128.57.
  • Powder is a convenience, not a requirement, if you reach your target from food.

Why does protein matter more after 40?

Muscle mass and strength start to drift down in midlife, and the muscle response to a given amount of protein weakens with age, which is why older adults sit at the higher end of per-meal recommendations (closer to 0.4 g/kg per meal). Perimenopause is a time when many women notice changes in body composition. The best-supported counter is resistance training plus adequate protein: a meta-analysis of 49 trials (Morton and colleagues, 2018) found protein supplementation added about 0.3 kg of fat-free mass and about 2.5 kg to one-rep-max strength over training alone, on average. These are modest but real gains. Evidence level: strong for protein with training, moderate for age-specific dosing.

How much protein?

Goal Target At 65 kg
General health, not training at least 0.8 g/kg (a minimum) 52 g
Maintain muscle with strength training 1.4 to 2.0 g/kg (ISSN) 91 to 130 g
Per meal about 0.4 g/kg, 25 to 30 g 26 g

Do you need a powder?

If you eat 25 to 30 g of protein at three meals plus a snack, no. Powder helps when breakfast is toast and coffee, or when a busy day leaves you short. Choose by need:

  • Lactose-sensitive or bloating: whey isolate has far less lactose than concentrate (isolate vs concentrate).
  • Plant-based: use slightly larger servings or pea-rice blends to reach 2 to 3 g leucine (best plant protein).
  • Sweetener-sensitive: unflavoured or short-label products.

What does it cost?

October 2026 prices per 100 g of powder in South Africa: Primal Whey Isolate 750 g, R700 (R93.33, sucralose); ATP Fitness Unflavoured Whey Protein Isolate 800 g, R900 (R112.50, ATP shop, no sweeteners); ATP Madagascan Vanilla Isolate 800 g, R950 (R118.75); NPL 100% Whey Isolate 700 g, R900 (R128.57; label 19.9 g protein per serving). ATP does not publish its protein per serving, so we cannot give a cost per gram of protein; check its nutrition table before buying. Honest ATP trade-offs: a young brand (2024), unflavoured is plain tasting, no published third-party sport certification, and a higher price than Primal. What else supports muscle at this age?

  • Resistance training twice or three times a week is the main driver.
  • Creatine 3 to 5 g a day has emerging evidence for women in midlife (creatine in perimenopause).
  • Vitamin D and calcium if your intake is low (bone health).
  • Sleep and overall calories: under-eating reduces muscle gain.

Safety

Whey is safe for healthy adults. Check with your doctor or dietitian if you have kidney disease, a milk allergy, take regular medication, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Menopausal symptoms, unexplained weight change or fatigue deserve a GP visit rather than a supplement.
