What is the best vegan omega-3 in South Africa?

Answer first

The best vegan omega-3 in South Africa is an algae oil that states the milligrams of EPA and DHA on the label. Algae is where fish get their omega-3, and flax or chia (ALA) converts poorly to EPA and DHA. As of October 2026, algae oil costs far more per gram of EPA+DHA than fish oil: roughly R98 versus about R7 to R11 for mainstream fish-oil softgels.

  • Algae is the original source of EPA and DHA in fish; flax and chia supply only ALA, which converts poorly.
  • Viridian Vegan EPA & DHA Oil (30 ml) was R665 at Faithful to Nature in October 2026 and lists 225 mg EPA+DHA per ml, about R98 per gram.
  • Mainstream fish-oil softgels in our research cost about R7.22 to R10.55 per gram of EPA+DHA (October 2026).
  • ISSN 2025: about 1.4 g/day of extra EPA+DHA raises the omega-3 index from roughly 4.4% to 8%.

Why choose algae oil instead of flax or chia?

Flax, chia and walnuts supply ALA, a short-chain omega-3 that the body converts to EPA and DHA only at a low rate. Fish accumulate EPA and DHA by eating marine algae, so algae oil gives vegans the same long-chain omega-3s directly, without fish. For athletes, the ISSN's 2025 position stand discusses doses of around 1-2 g of EPA+DHA a day, and notes that raising the omega-3 index from about 4.4% to 8% takes roughly 1.4 g a day of extra EPA+DHA. Evidence level for performance benefits: moderate and inconsistent; the clearest case is for people who eat little oily fish.

What does vegan omega-3 cost in South Africa?

Our October 2026 research found one dedicated algae oil with a published EPA+DHA figure: Viridian Vegan EPA & DHA Oil (30 ml) at Faithful to Nature for R665. The listing states 225 mg of combined EPA and DHA per ml, so one bottle holds about 6.75 g, or roughly R98 per gram. The label suggests 0.5 ml two to four times a day (1-2 ml, about 225-450 mg EPA+DHA). Reaching 1 g a day would take around 4.5 ml, and the bottle would then last under a week.

For comparison, mainstream fish-oil softgels in our research cost about R7.22 to R10.55 per gram of EPA+DHA (Biolife Fish Oil R7.22, Dis-Chem Gold Omega 3 Supreme R8.06, Dis-Chem Gold Salmon Oil+ R10.55; premium Solgar Wild Alaskan about R24), so algae oil is roughly 9 to 14 times dearer per gram on current South African shelves. We did not find a priced algae-oil capsule at Dis-Chem or Clicks; availability changes, so check current listings.

How do you pick an algae oil?

  1. Read the EPA+DHA milligrams, not the total oil per capsule. "1 000 mg algae oil" may contain only a fraction of that as EPA+DHA.
  2. Compare cost per gram of EPA+DHA, not per bottle.
  3. Check the oil is protected from oxidation (vitamin E or tocopherols, dark glass or sealed capsules) and store it cool, away from the car dashboard.
  4. Look for a vegan statement on the label, since capsule shells can be gelatine.

Do you need a supplement at all?

Not if you are happy with your intake. Plant-based eaters who skip fish usually get little EPA or DHA, so algae oil is reasonable for those who want it. Eating oily fish two to three times a week is the cheaper route for people who are not vegan; see the best omega-3 supplements in South Africa for fish-oil options, and which supplements vegan athletes need for B12, iron and creatine alongside omega-3. If skin or joints are your goal, read vegan collagen alternatives.

Who should talk to a doctor first?

  • Anyone on anticoagulants or antiplatelets (warfarin, aspirin), or facing surgery.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women, who should ask about DHA dose and sources.
  • Under-18s, who should rely on food.

Stop and see a doctor if you develop unusual bruising or bleeding.
