Does collagen actually work?

Possibly, in modest ways, but the evidence is emerging and mixed. Small studies suggest 15 g of collagen with vitamin C before loading exercise can raise a collagen-synthesis marker, while skin benefits shrank in higher-quality, non-industry-funded trials. Collagen is not a complete protein. In South Africa a daily 10 g costs roughly R10–R18 (October 2026).

  • Shaw 2017 (n=8): 15 g gelatin plus vitamin C one hour before skipping doubled a collagen-synthesis marker (+153% vs +54% placebo at 4 hours).
  • A 2025 meta-analysis (23 trials, 1 474 people) found skin benefits disappeared in non-industry-funded and higher-quality trials; industry disputes it.
  • Collagen lacks tryptophan, so it is not a complete protein for muscle building.
  • Plain collagen powder costs R10.44–R17.68 per 10 g in South Africa (October 2026).

Does collagen actually work?

It depends on the goal, and for most goals the answer is "maybe, a little, and the evidence is still developing". The AIS places collagen in Group B (emerging evidence). Collagen peptides are digested; some collagen-specific di- and tripeptides, notably prolyl-hydroxyproline, appear in blood after ingestion and are thought to signal skin and connective-tissue cells. Effects are indirect, not "collagen goes straight to your skin".

What does the evidence show for each goal?

Goal Evidence Notes
Tendon and ligament Emerging Shaw 2017 (n=8): 15 g gelatin plus about 48 mg vitamin C one hour before 6 minutes of skipping doubled a collagen-synthesis marker (PINP +153% at 4 h vs +54% placebo); 5 g added little. Lis & Baar 2019 (n=10) saw a trend of about 20% that was not statistically significant.
Skin Mixed Choi 2019 systematic review (11 trials, 805 people) reported better elasticity and hydration. A 2025 meta-analysis (Myung & Park, 23 trials, 1 474 people) found pooled benefits disappeared in non-industry-funded and higher-quality trials; industry disputes the analysis.
Joints Modest Trials often used 5–10 g a day; best in older adults with joint discomfort.
Muscle Poor Lacks tryptophan; effectively no protein score as a sole protein.

Many studies are small, short, use markers rather than outcomes, and some are industry funded. Read does collagen help skin and wrinkles and collagen for joints and tendons.

What dose and timing?

  • Connective-tissue protocol: about 15 g with about 50 mg vitamin C, 30–60 minutes before short loading exercise.
  • Skin: commonly 2.5–10 g a day for 8–12 weeks; timing is not important.
  • Joint trials: often 5–10 g a day.

What does it cost in South Africa?

As of October 2026, plain collagen powder costs R10.44–R17.68 per 10 g: ATP Fitness 910 g is R950 (R10.44), The Harvest Table 800 g R909 (R11.36), and Be Bright Original 300 g R470 on sale (R15.67). Ten grams a day therefore costs about R313–R530 a month. ATP's strengths are price and a single ingredient; its trade-offs are no flavour, a young brand and no published third-party testing. The Harvest Table is a credible alternative. Capsules at 1.2 g a day deliver roughly one-eighth of a 10 g scoop. See best collagen powder and best collagen in South Africa.

Is collagen safe?

It is a food protein and is well tolerated. Avoid marine collagen with a fish allergy and bovine if you avoid beef. It is not a complete protein, so do not count it toward muscle-building protein needs. Check with a doctor or clinician if you are pregnant, under 18, have a health condition such as kidney disease or take medication, and ask for certificates of analysis if contamination concerns you. Collagen does not treat or prevent any disease.
