Are collagen gummies worth it?

Answer first

Usually not, if the aim is a proven collagen dose. Gummies typically deliver far less collagen per piece than the 5 to 10 g studied in trials, and they add sugar or sugar alcohols. We did not capture any collagen gummy in our October 2026 South African price research, so check the label for grams per gummy before paying.

  • Collagen trials used 5 to 10 g a day (up to 15 g for tendon protocols); gummies usually supply a small fraction per piece.
  • Gummies add sugar or sugar alcohols such as maltitol or sorbitol; powders like ATP's contain no sweeteners.
  • We captured no collagen gummy in our October 2026 SA price research, so no Rand per 10 g can be given.
  • Powder benchmark: R10.44 to R17.68 per 10 g of collagen (October 2026).

What should a gummy deliver?

Most collagen trials used 5 to 10 g a day (tendon studies up to 15 g with vitamin C). A gummy is a small chewable made mostly from gelatine or pectin, sugar or syrup, and flavouring. Fitting 5 to 10 g of collagen into a single gummy would make it very large, so most products list a small amount per piece and expect you to eat several. That makes the label dose per gummy and the number you must eat the two figures to check first. Many also list "collagen" in a blend with biotin, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid or botanicals without stating grams of collagen, which makes the dose unknowable.

The hidden costs: sugar and sweeteners

Gummies need a sweet, sticky matrix. That usually means glucose syrup and sugar. "Sugar-free" gummies use sugar alcohols such as maltitol or sorbitol, which can cause gas and loose stools in some people. A powder avoids both problems: ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen and The Harvest Table Bovine Collagen are single-ingredient and contain no sweeteners.

How do prices compare?

We did not find collagen gummies in the South African price list we compiled in October 2026, so we cannot give a Rand-per-10 g figure for them; work it out yourself:

price of the pack ÷ total grams of collagen in the pack × 10

Then compare with powders, which cost roughly R10.44 to R17.68 per 10 g at the same date:

Format R per 10 g collagen (October 2026)
ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen 910 g (R950, ATP shop) R10.44
The Harvest Table Bovine 800 g (R909, Faithful to Nature) R11.36
Collagen capsules about R34 to R69
Collagen Cafe liquid, 500 ml (R859.99) about R34.40

If a gummy gives 1 g of collagen, a 10 g dose would need ten gummies. Compare that cost, and the sugar, to a single scoop.

When might gummies make sense?

  • You will not take any other format and you accept a smaller dose.
  • You treat it as a small habit rather than a trial-style dose.
  • You have checked grams of collagen, sugar content and ingredients.

What do we know about effectiveness?

Collagen evidence overall is emerging: the Australian Institute of Sport classes it as Group B, and a 2025 meta-analysis found skin benefits weaker in non-industry-funded trials. We found no trial that tested collagen gummies. Whatever effect exists was seen with defined doses of peptides or gelatine, not with sweets.

Our recommendation

If you want to try collagen in South Africa, start with a powder: it is cheaper per gram and has no added sugar. ATP Fitness Hydrolysed Collagen is the cheapest we priced; its trade-offs are no flavour, a young brand and no published third-party certificate. Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, diabetic, on regular medication or with kidney disease should check with a doctor first.
