What does a clean-label supplement mean?

Answer first

A clean-label supplement has a short ingredient list you can verify: no sweeteners, artificial flavours or colours, no proprietary blends and no unnecessary fillers. It is not a legal term in South Africa, and clean does not mean tested or more effective. Check the ingredient list, protein per 100 g and any certificate of analysis.

  • 'Clean label' is a marketing idea, not a legal category in South Africa; R146 restricts words like 'natural' and 'pure'.
  • Sucralose is the most common sweetener in local whey (NPL, Primal, Biogen Complete Whey, Tony Ferguson, Myprotein).
  • ATP Fitness unflavoured isolate costs R112.50 per 100 g versus R93.33 for sucralose-sweetened Primal Whey Isolate (October 2026).
  • ATP does not publish protein per serving or third-party certification.

What does "clean label" actually mean?

It is a marketing and design idea, not a defined legal category. R146 restricts words such as "natural" and "pure", so what a pack says is limited. In practice, clean label means:

  • A short ingredient list (often one to three items)
  • No sweeteners, artificial flavours or colours
  • No proprietary blends and no hidden doses
  • No unnecessary fillers or anti-caking agents
  • Disclosed amounts for every active

Why do people want it?

Preferences vary: avoiding sucralose or acesulfame-K, tolerating products with fewer additives, wanting to know exactly what is in a tub, or reducing the number of variables when something disagrees with them. The evidence that these additives harm healthy people at typical intakes is limited, so clean label is a preference, not a health requirement.

How common is it in South Africa?

Rare in whey. Sucralose dominates local whey (NPL, Primal, Biogen Complete Whey, Tony Ferguson, Myprotein), PVM uses cyclamate and saccharin, and plant proteins use stevia, erythritol or sucralose blends. Unsweetened options we found in October 2026 include ATP Fitness, Lifestyle Food Whey Concentrate Unflavoured (500 g, R500) and the Faithful to Nature and Raw Origins pea proteins. Single-ingredient creatine is easier to find, such as Biogen and Foundation Creapure, as well as ATP.

How does ATP Fitness fit?

ATP Fitness describes a "Simple, Precise, Pure" approach with no sweeteners or artificial flavouring: unflavoured whey concentrate (1 kg, R800) and isolate (800 g, R900), Madagascan vanilla and Belgian cocoa versions (R950), and single-ingredient creatine, glutamine, beta-alanine and citrulline. Strengths: real vanilla and cocoa as the only flavour, and a short list.

Honest trade-offs:

  • Price. Unflavoured isolate is R112.50 per 100 g versus Primal Whey Isolate at R93.33 (sucralose-sweetened).
  • Taste and availability. Unflavoured products taste plain, there are few flavours, and the unflavoured isolate was out of stock on the ATP shop at last check.
  • Data. ATP does not publish protein per serving or third-party certification.
  • Age. A 2024 brand with a smaller retail footprint than USN or Biogen.

How do you verify a clean-label claim?

  1. Ingredient list on the pack, not only the web page.
  2. Protein per 100 g. Isolate should be about 85-90 g, concentrate 70-80 g.
  3. Certificate of analysis or third-party tests, if the brand publishes them.
  4. Nutrition table per 100 g and per serving; see how to read a supplement label.
  5. Flavour source. "Natural flavour" can hide complex systems; real vanilla or cocoa is stated by name.

Does clean mean safer or better?

No. A clean-label tub can still be mislabelled or contaminated, and a sweetened tub can be perfectly sound. For banned-substance safety, batch testing matters more; see what third-party tested means. The test of value is the usual one: cost per dose, honest labelling and traceability.
