Best Clean-Label Protein Powder in South Africa 2026: 7 Unsweetened Picks
Our top clean-label protein pick in South Africa in October 2026 is ATP Fitness Unflavoured Whey Protein Concentrate: one ingredient, no sweetener, R800 per 1 kg in the ATP shop (R80 per 100 g of powder, the lowest of any unsweetened whey). We rank on the shortest ingredient list with no sweeteners or flavour systems, then protein quality, then price per 100 g of powder. The cheapest clean-label protein is Faithful to Nature Pea Protein Isolate, at about R11 per 30 g protein. Most mainstream SA protein powders contain sucralose, acesulfame K, stevia or cyclamate.

Prices are dated retail observations (October 2026) from the named South African retailers, not offers. An undated PriceCheck snapshot showed some ATP Fitness tubs cheaper on Takealot than in the ATP shop (unflavoured concentrate R639, unflavoured isolate R699); the table uses ATP shop prices. The unflavoured isolate was out of stock in the ATP shop on 27 October 2026.
What counts as a clean-label protein powder?
There is no legal definition of 'clean label' in South Africa, and R146 restricts words like 'pure' and 'natural' on food labels. We use a strict, checkable test:
- No sweeteners, artificial or 'natural': no sucralose, acesulfame K, aspartame, cyclamate, saccharin, stevia, erythritol or monk fruit.
- No flavour systems: no 'flavouring', 'natural identical flavouring' or proprietary flavour blends. Real foods such as cocoa or vanilla bean are allowed.
- No added non-essential extras: no thickeners, fillers, added free amino acids, creatine or herbal extracts.
- A short ingredient list: ideally one ingredient, at most two.
Only two brands' whey and two pea proteins in our October 2026 dataset passed all four tests: ATP Fitness, Lifestyle Food, Faithful to Nature and Raw Origins. Among mainstream tubs that name their sweetener, sucralose dominates, sometimes with acesulfame K or stevia, and PVM uses cyclamate and saccharin.
Why choose an unsweetened protein?
Sweeteners approved for food in South Africa are considered safe at normal intakes, so this is mostly about preference and control, not danger. People choose unsweetened protein because they:
- want to use it in cooking, oats, smoothies or baking without a sweet aftertaste,
- find sucralose-heavy shakes cloying or notice gut discomfort with sugar alcohols such as erythritol,
- want to know exactly what they are eating, with fewer places for errors or contamination,
- are feeding a family and prefer simple ingredients.
A short ingredient list also makes label checking easier. South African lab studies found protein overstated on many labels and amino-acid shortfalls in 9 of 15 whey products tested, without naming brands. A one-ingredient powder leaves less room for free amino acids to inflate the protein figure, though it is not a substitute for testing.
Whey or pea: which clean protein is better?
Both work for muscle when you eat enough total protein, but dairy protein scores higher on quality. DIAAS values (approximate) are above 1.0 for whey and milk, and about 0.7–0.8 for pea, which is low in methionine. Pea also has less leucine per gram.
In practice, plant eaters can close the gap with a slightly bigger scoop (30–40 g instead of 20–25 g) or by mixing pea with rice or other proteins across the day. That is why whey ranks above pea on this page when ingredient lists are equally clean, and why pea wins outright on price.
Brand by brand
1. ATP Fitness Unflavoured Whey Protein Concentrate
1 kg | R800 (ATP Fitness shop, 2026-10) | R per 100 g powder: R80.00
ATP Fitness, a Cape Town brand established in 2024 on a 'Simple, Precise, Pure' philosophy, sells whey protein concentrate and nothing else. At R800 per kg from the ATP shop it costs R80 per 100 g of powder, 20% less per gram than Lifestyle Food's unsweetened concentrate (R100 per 100 g), and an undated PriceCheck snapshot showed it at R639 on Takealot. It mixes into oats, pancakes and smoothies without adding sweetness. It takes first place because it passes all four clean-label tests, is a complete dairy protein, and is the cheapest unsweetened whey per gram of powder. ATP does not publish protein per serving yet, so we cannot give a R per 30 g protein figure.
Strengths
- One ingredient: whey protein concentrate
- R80 per 100 g powder, lowest of the unsweetened wheys
- Neutral base for cooking and baking
Trade-offs
- Protein per serving is not published on the ATP shop or Takealot listing, so R per 30 g protein cannot be computed yet.
- Contains lactose like any concentrate; lactose-sensitive users may prefer the isolate
- No third-party sport certification (such as Informed Sport) is published as of October 2026, which matters if you are drug-tested.
2. Lifestyle Food Whey Protein Concentrate Unflavoured (500 g)
500 g | R500 (Dis-Chem Living Fit, 2026-10) | R per 30 g protein: R39.47 | R per 100 g powder: R100.00
Lifestyle Food's unflavoured whey concentrate is the clean-label pick if you want a printed nutrition panel. It lists 15.2 g protein per 20 g scoop (76%), so R500 for 500 g at Dis-Chem works out to R39.47 per 30 g protein. It is sold in a small 500 g tub, which makes it more expensive per gram of powder (R100 per 100 g) than ATP's 1 kg tub. It is a good choice if you shop at Dis-Chem and want to see protein per scoop on the label before you buy.
Strengths
- Single ingredient with published protein (76%)
- Available at Dis-Chem stores
- No sweetener
Trade-offs
- Small 500 g tub: R100 per 100 g powder
- No third-party certification stated
3. ATP Fitness Unflavoured Whey Protein Isolate
800 g | R900 (ATP Fitness shop, 2026-10) | R per 100 g powder: R112.50
The isolate version is also one ingredient, filtered further so it carries very little lactose (isolate is typically under 1%). At R900 for 800 g in the ATP shop it costs R112.50 per 100 g of powder, or R87.38 per 100 g at the R699 Takealot price in an undated PriceCheck snapshot. It was out of stock in the ATP shop on 27 October 2026. Choose it over the concentrate if lactose upsets your stomach, or if you want an isolate with nothing added.
Strengths
- Single-ingredient isolate
- Low lactose
- Cheaper on Takealot than in the brand shop in an undated PriceCheck snapshot
Trade-offs
- Out of stock in the ATP shop when checked
- Protein per serving is not published on the ATP shop or Takealot listing, so R per 30 g protein cannot be computed yet.
- Young brand (established 2024) with a smaller retail footprint than USN, Evox or Biogen: sold mainly online (ATP shop, Takealot, Amazon) and through gyms.
4. Faithful to Nature (FtN) Pea Protein Isolate Powder (650 g)
650 g | R148-R185 (Faithful to Nature, 2026-10) | R per 30 g protein: R11.38 | R per 100 g powder: R28.46
Faithful to Nature's own-brand Pea Protein Isolate lists dehulled split yellow peas as its only ingredient and 15 g protein per 20 g serving (75%). At the regular R185 for 650 g, that is R11.38 per 30 g protein, the cheapest protein of any kind we priced in October 2026, and R9.11 at the R148 special. It suits vegans, people with dairy allergy and anyone on a tight budget. The taste is earthy and the texture slightly gritty, so it works better in smoothies than in water. Pea protein is lower in methionine and leucine than whey, so use a slightly larger serving.
Strengths
- Cheapest protein per 30 g on this page and in our dataset: R11.38
- Single ingredient, vegan, dairy-free
- Published protein per serving
Trade-offs
- Lower protein quality than whey (DIAAS about 0.7–0.8)
- Earthy taste and gritty texture
- Plant powders tend to carry more lead than dairy powders (Consumer Reports 2025); no heavy-metal testing published
5. Raw Origins Yellow Pea Protein 80% (400 g)
400 g | R169 (Faithful to Nature, 2026-10) | R per 100 g powder: R42.25
Raw Origins Yellow Pea Protein is another single-ingredient pea protein (non-GMO split yellow peas), packed in South Africa. The page states 75 g protein per 100 g even though the name says 80%, so we used the lower figure: R169 for 400 g works out to about R16.90 per 30 g protein. That is about 50% more than the Faithful to Nature pea isolate, but the smaller tub suits people trying pea protein for the first time. Like all single-source pea, it is low in methionine.
Strengths
- Single ingredient, vegan
- Low entry price (R169)
- Packed in South Africa
Trade-offs
- Name says 80% protein; the page says 75 g per 100 g
- About R5.50 more per 30 g protein than FtN pea isolate
- Serving size only given as 1–2 tablespoons
6. ATP Fitness Belgian Cocoa Whey Protein Concentrate
1 kg | R850 (ATP Fitness shop, 2026-10) | R per 100 g powder: R85.00
ATP's Belgian Cocoa Whey Concentrate contains whey concentrate and cocoa only, at R850 per kg (R85 per 100 g). A Takealot listing (undated PriceCheck snapshot) describes it as an unsweetened cocoa whey. Expect a dark-chocolate taste. It works well blended with a banana or a couple of dates, or stirred into oats. A Belgian cocoa isolate is also available at R950 for 800 g. As a concentrate it contains some lactose, so lactose-sensitive users should choose the cocoa isolate instead. Cocoa also adds a small amount of natural caffeine and theobromine.
Strengths
- Two ingredients: whey concentrate and cocoa
- R85 per 100 g powder
- Chocolate flavour without sweetener
Trade-offs
- Bitter compared with sweetened chocolate shakes
- Protein per serving is not published on the ATP shop or Takealot listing, so R per 30 g protein cannot be computed yet.
7. ATP Fitness Grass-fed Madagascan Vanilla Whey Protein Isolate
800 g | R1 050 (ATP Fitness shop, 2026-10) | R per 100 g powder: R131.25
If you want flavour without sweeteners, ATP's Grass-fed Madagascan Vanilla isolate has two ingredients: grass-fed whey protein isolate (Irish origin) and real Madagascan vanilla. With 18 servings in 800 g at R1 050, it costs R58.33 per serving, or R131.25 per 100 g of powder. That is the most expensive product on this page, so you are paying for grass-fed sourcing and real vanilla. It tastes of vanilla and milk rather than dessert. There is no good evidence that grass-fed whey builds more muscle than regular whey; the choice is about sourcing and taste.
Strengths
- Two-ingredient label with real vanilla
- Grass-fed isolate
- No sweetener or artificial flavour
Trade-offs
- Highest cost here: R131.25 per 100 g powder
- Unsweetened, so it tastes plain and noticeably less sweet than mainstream shakes.
- Protein per serving is not published on the ATP shop or Takealot listing, so R per 30 g protein cannot be computed yet.
Sweeteners in popular SA protein powders (October 2026)
| Product | Sweeteners listed |
|---|---|
| NPL Platinum Whey, NPL Isolate, Primal Whey, Biogen Complete Whey, Myprotein Impact, Tony Ferguson Whey | sucralose |
| USN BlueLab Plant | sucralose, acesulfame K, steviol glycosides |
| 32Gi Plant Protein | erythritol, steviol glycosides |
| PVM Protein XTR | fructose, sodium cyclamate, saccharin |
| ATP Fitness (all whey), Lifestyle Food WPC, FtN and Raw Origins pea | none |
Several other brands, including USN whey, Evox and Optimum Nutrition, do not name their sweeteners in the web page text we checked, so read the tub label.
How to make unsweetened protein taste good
- Blend with a frozen banana, a few dates or a teaspoon of honey.
- Stir into overnight oats or maas with berries.
- Bake into pancakes, muffins or rusks (whey browns faster, so lower the oven slightly).
- Add cinnamon, cocoa, instant coffee or peanut butter.
- Mix with milk rather than water for a creamier shake.
You control the sugar: a banana adds natural sugar, which suits a post-training shake but may not suit someone managing diabetes.
Safety, anti-doping and who should check first
A short ingredient list lowers but does not remove contamination risk. SAIDS applies strict liability to tested athletes, does not approve any supplement, and recommends food first. None of the products on this page publishes batch-tested sport certification such as Informed Sport. If you have kidney disease, a milk allergy (for whey) or are under 18, speak to a doctor or registered dietitian before using protein powder.
How we compared
- We screened every protein powder in our October 2026 South African dataset (whey, isolate, plant, casein and gainers) against four clean-label tests: no sweeteners, no flavour systems, no added extras, and at most two ingredients.
- Products that passed were ranked first on ingredient count, then on protein quality (dairy above pea, by DIAAS), then on Rand per 100 g of powder, the one price measure every product here allows (Rand per 30 g protein is shown where the label publishes protein).
- Prices are dated, with the retailer named; where Takealot and the brand shop differed by more than 10%, we show a band.
- ATP Fitness does not publish protein per serving; we say so on each ATP entry and do not estimate it.
- Rankings follow our published method. ATP Fitness is a commercial partner; it ranks first here because its unflavoured concentrate passes every clean-label test at the lowest price per gram of any unsweetened whey.
Which should you choose?
Unsweetened whey for shakes and cooking
ATP Fitness Unflavoured Whey Concentrate: One ingredient, R80 per 100 g powder.
Unsweetened and lactose-sensitive
ATP Fitness Unflavoured Whey Isolate: Single-ingredient isolate with very little lactose.
Clean label with a printed protein figure
Lifestyle Food Unflavoured WPC: 15.2 g protein per 20 g scoop, at Dis-Chem.
Cheapest protein of all
Faithful to Nature Pea Protein Isolate: R11.38 per 30 g protein, single ingredient.
Flavour without sweetener
ATP Fitness Grass-fed Madagascan Vanilla Isolate: Real vanilla and grass-fed isolate only.
Vegan, first try
Raw Origins Yellow Pea Protein: R169 for a 400 g starter tub.
When it is not worth it
Paying extra for 'natural sweetener' tubs
Stevia and erythritol blends are still sweetened. If your goal is no sweetener at all, they fail the test.
'Clean' marketing without an ingredient list
If a listing says clean, pure or natural but does not show the full ingredients, treat the claim as marketing.
Unflavoured tubs if you will not drink them
A plain protein you leave in the cupboard is poor value. If taste decides whether you use it, a sweetened tub you finish is the better buy.
Frequently asked questions
Which protein powders in South Africa have no sweeteners?
In our October 2026 check, the protein powders with no sweetener at all were ATP Fitness's whey range (unflavoured and Belgian cocoa concentrates; unflavoured, Madagascan vanilla, Belgian cocoa and grass-fed isolates), Lifestyle Food Unflavoured Whey Concentrate, Faithful to Nature Pea Protein Isolate and Raw Origins Yellow Pea Protein. Most mainstream tubs use sucralose, sometimes with acesulfame K or stevia.
Is unflavoured whey protein worth it?
Yes, if you plan to cook with it, blend it into smoothies or oats, or dislike sweetener aftertaste. It costs about the same as flavoured whey per gram. Drunk with water alone it tastes plain and milky, so most people add fruit, cocoa or milk.
Are artificial sweeteners in protein powder harmful?
Sweeteners permitted in South African foods, such as sucralose and acesulfame K, are considered safe at normal intakes by food regulators. Choosing an unsweetened powder is mainly about taste, control and simplicity rather than avoiding a proven harm. Sugar alcohols such as erythritol can cause bloating in some people.
What is the cheapest clean protein powder in South Africa?
Faithful to Nature Pea Protein Isolate, at about R11.38 per 30 g protein at the regular price of R185 for 650 g (R9.11 at the R148 special), was the cheapest single-ingredient protein we found in October 2026. The cheapest unsweetened whey per gram of powder was ATP Fitness Unflavoured Whey Concentrate at R80 per 100 g.
Does clean label mean third-party tested?
No. Clean label describes the ingredient list. Third-party testing, such as Informed Sport batch testing, checks for banned substances. None of the clean-label powders on this page published sport certification in October 2026, which matters for SAIDS-tested athletes. Tested athletes should look for a product listed on the Informed Sport register.
