Biogen's current legal ownership is not published in the sources we could verify. The brand's own 20-year announcement says it began in 2004 as an in-house brand concept for Dis-Chem, founded by a team led by Stan Goetsch, Craig Fairweather and Paul McHarg, and now led by Brandon Fairweather and Travis Victor. It does not state who owns the company today.

  • Biogen's own '20 years' announcement says the brand began in 2004 as an in-house concept for Dis-Chem.
  • Biogen's current legal owner is not stated in the announcement or the other sources we checked.
  • Biogen shop prices matched Dis-Chem Living Fit to the cent on every SKU compared (October 2026), which does not prove ownership.
  • Biogen states enrolment in Informed Sport, Informed Choice and Informed Protein (register not checked).

Who owns Biogen supplements in South Africa?

We can answer part of this from Biogen's own words, and we will not guess the rest.

What does Biogen say about its origins?

Biogen's "Biogen at 20 years" announcement states that the brand started in 2004. It describes Biogen as originally conceptualised as an in-house brand for Dis-Chem, which it notes was the first South African retailer to stock sports supplements. The announcement names a founding team led by Stan Goetsch, Craig Fairweather and Paul McHarg, and says Brandon Fairweather and Travis Victor now lead the team. It also states the company is ready for "the next phase of growth".

Is Biogen owned by Dis-Chem today?

That is not stated. The announcement describes the brand's origin but gives no current corporate structure or shareholding. Biogen products are sold through Dis-Chem and Dis-Chem Living Fit as well as the Biogen shop (biogen.co.za), and Biogen's own shop prices match Dis-Chem Living Fit to the cent on every product we compared. That shows close retail alignment, but it does not prove ownership, so we do not describe Biogen as a Dis-Chem house brand.

How can you confirm ownership?

  • CIPC company search. The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission lists registered South African companies and directors; a trading name like "Biogen" must be matched to its registered entity.
  • Product labels. R146 requires the manufacturer or importer's name and South African address on foodstuff labels; the registered entity on the tub is the legally responsible party.
  • Dis-Chem's integrated annual report, if the retailer discloses a shareholding in the brand.

What do we know about the products?

Biogen sells whey (Complete Whey 875 g, R459.99 to R469.99; Iso Whey Premium 750 g, R765; Whey Isolate 700 g, R1 300), plant protein (700 g, R400), mass gainers (Bulk 45/150 4 kg, R600), creatine (500 g, R445, about R4.45 per 5 g) and wellness lines including collagen. The company says it has voluntarily enrolled in Informed Sport, Informed Choice and Informed Protein quality-assurance programmes; we have not checked the certifier registers. Biogen is also an official Springbok Rugby partner (a sponsorship, not a certification).
