What is protein spiking and how do you avoid it in South Africa?
Amino spiking, also called protein spiking, means adding cheap free amino acids such as glycine or creatine to a powder so a nitrogen-based lab test reports more protein than the whey supplies. In South Africa, University of Pretoria testing of 70 protein products found 21 held more than 10% less protein than labelled. Check ingredient lists for added free aminos.
- University of Pretoria (2019): 70 sold-in-SA protein products, 68.6% differed significantly from label protein, 21 held more than 10% less, 5 held 42–80% less.
- Naidoo et al. (2018): 9 of 15 best-selling SA whey products failed draft R429 amino-acid criteria; those criteria are not law.
- Protein is calculated as nitrogen x 6.25, so 1 g of glycine registers as about 1.17 g 'protein' (our calculation).
- Whey is about 10–11% leucine, so 25 g of protein should give roughly 2.5–3 g leucine.
What is amino spiking?
Most labels estimate protein from total nitrogen (the Kjeldahl or Dumas method), multiplied by 6.25. Real protein is about 16% nitrogen, which is where 6.25 comes from. The test cannot tell protein nitrogen from the nitrogen in a cheap free amino acid, so a manufacturer who adds one can push the reported "protein" up without adding complete protein.
| Added ingredient | Nitrogen share | Registers as "protein" per 1 g added |
|---|---|---|
| Glycine | 18.7% | about 1.17 g |
| Creatine monohydrate | 28.2% | about 1.76 g |
| Taurine or free leucine | about 11% | about 0.7 g (weaker lever, but still displaces whey) |
These are our calculations from molecular formulae, shown to explain the mechanism, not findings about any product.
Is it a problem in South Africa?
Two peer-reviewed South African studies exist, and neither names brands. Schönfeldt, Hall and Pretorius (University of Pretoria, 2019) bought 70 high-protein products: measured protein differed significantly from the label in 68.6%, 21 held more than 10% less than stated, and five held 42–80% less. Of 15 products tested for amino acids, 40% fell below the quality threshold in the then-draft labelling regulations. Naidoo, Naidoo and Bangalee (2018) tested 15 best-selling whey products and reported that 9 failed the draft R429 amino-acid criteria, with leucine below the stated level in nearly all.
These results show label shortfalls and weak amino-acid profiles. They do not prove spiking by any brand, they are pre-2026 snapshots, and the R429 criteria were never law. Under R146 and section 41 of the Consumer Protection Act, an overstated protein claim can be a misleading representation.
How do you spot it on a label?
- Ingredient list: a whey product should list whey (concentrate, isolate or hydrolysate) plus flavour and sweetener. Free glycine, creatine or an "amino matrix" in a whey tub is a flag.
- Protein density: typical isolate sits near 85–90 g protein per 100 g and concentrate near 70–80 g. A blend claiming more than isolate is suspect. A useful check: USN BlueLab lists 23.6 g in a 32 g scoop (74%), which is plausible for a blend.
- Leucine: whey is about 10–11% leucine, so 25 g of protein should give roughly 2.5–3 g.
- Proprietary blends: read why proprietary blends hide the dose.
What should you do?
Prefer brands that print serving size, protein per serving and a full ingredient list, and ask for an amino-acid profile or certificate of analysis. Listings that publish the numbers include Lifestyle Food's single-ingredient concentrate (15.2 g per 20 g scoop, 76%) and NPL's isolate (19.9 g per 25 g). ATP Fitness's shop listings showed no nutrition panel in the page text when we checked on 27 October 2026, so ask any brand for the label figures.
